Hello all,
I've been able to get ps2 games to boot off the external on the slim ps2, but they're really slow. The main reason why I went the external route was to have a bunch of games readily available. However the games are running too slow.
The ps2 is usb 1.1?

No matter what you do (as long as you somehow find a way to upgrade PS2's USB ports to 2.0 from 1.1) It's the port that is only capable of
1.1 functionality so even if you put USB 2.0 HDD it will only work to
1.1 potential.
:/

Okay. I accept defeat.
Out of pure curiosity why would anybody want to run games off an external HD then?
I mean I found a wealth of information on how to get it to work, but none mentioned the critical point that doing so would lead to poor performance compared to loading from the optical drive.
I am guessing for homebrew stuff, or anything that does not need to read data actively.

I did it I guess because of the ease to use it and test games, and I already had SM 3.8 coder and USbextreme. I have about 40 games or so on my 350GB USB drive. Sometimes the movies are choppy and slow, but the game plays fine. I only keep the games on that play, and use it on my V5, V7 and my V14 slim. Then when the kids want to play one they can use the usb drive and I use the other.
Definitely a hd is better(more compatible with games)or modchip the ps2 is better yet.

The only advantage in using USB Advance is not to overworked your lense. IMO

Well
I've tired it but it didnt work with me ( but u may give it a shot)
download usbextreme, it is easy GUI software will help u to transfer games to your hdd
then you need to burn USBAdvance to a CD using image burning wizard and boot it from your PS2 while connecting your External USB Hdd to PS2

You would be far better off getting a IDE hard drive for your V7 than a USB hard drive, and yes you would need a network adapter. You can't update your usb drives to 2.0 from 1.1.
There are many guides on here on how to transfer/play games on the hd after installed. Also on how to run a memory card exploit.

I never said you couldnt use a USB hard drive, but would be better off using a IDE hd and for that you would need a network adapter.
More games are compatible off an ide hd.
If you go with a usb hard drive than you can use usb advance, which yes you can get from the link I posted above.
@ ya22er
What type of mod chip do you have. Some one with more knowledge on mod chips and usb drives may be able to help you further.
Did you burn the usbadvance to cd and then trying to load usb drive, or exactly what procedure are you using?
The more info you guys post the more someone can help.

Actually I don't know which type of mod chips I have ( I bought it from Dubai and already modded )
now let tell you exactly what I've done up to date:
1) Download the usb advance from www.sksapps.com and burned the image file using ( ALCOHOL 120 % ) into a CD.
2) Initiate My HDD ( with USB enclosure ) and format it ( NTFS ) using Windows Administrative Tools > Computer Management.
3) Format and transfer games to HDD using USBExtreme win tools ( format , install ).
4) Boot USBAdvance from CD.
@ step # 4 : Splash screen ( Play Station 2 ) appears then after the screen turn into black and no USB Advance menu ):
* so if I can launch software like ( uLaunchELF, sms , PGEN ), then what would be the problem with USB ADVANCE ?
also I've tried to launch it using uLaunchELF v4.12 , but no way
and if it helps ( my mod chip ) : how to know what is the type of it ?

Ok I guess to only know what type of modchip you would probably have to open up the PS2 to find out, unless it tells you something on your screen when you first start it up.
As for the usbadvance, you seem to be doing the steps right unless there is some special key on the joystick you must hit before it will work.
For the heck of it why don't you try the one I have uploaded.
Just click my signature, and then click my folder. Password is listed right under the link.
Then look for USBAdvance_GlobalWar-Edition and download it, burn it to cd and see if that one will work for you.
Another option would be is to put the usb advance either on your usb drive, boot up your ulaunchelf, and use filebrowser to go the usbadvance.elf and then run it, or tranfer it to your memory card, rename it to BOOT.ELF, then on some mod chips you would hold R1 as you boot up the ps2.
