Backups sometimes SKIP or FREEZE

Sometimes my back-ups skip or completely freeze during playback. I'm using CloneDVD 2 and AnyDVD. I've tried slowing burn speed to 6x for 8x rated discs...still happens from time to time. I am using what I think to be quality media; Maxell, TDK, Sony, & Verbatim. I've also tried defragging. Still no luck.
Does anybody have any idea as to why this happens? Please help - it's annoying because it happens sporadically. I can't isolate the cause of the problem.

Try burning at 4x speed. Also, if there's multiple things running on your computer that are not necessary, stop them. This has happened to me as well on my computer which uses SDRAM. Shouldn't be a problem on one using DDR RAM which is my other computer. Of course I now use it to burn movies while multi-tasking and the only time this has happened since is when backing-up a somewhat damaged disc. 2-4x speed should do it. Takes longer but you get better results! Another thing is it could be your player. Be sure it's one that's made to play multi-formats. Players made for DVD-ROM only (movies on dvd from Hollywood)...don't like +/-R/RW disc. Hope this helps.

Are you multi-tasking?...If you are, you shouldn't.
You could also try clicking start/run/type in..msconfig,and shut down programs that might be running that you dont need.Also you could try shutting down your antivirus, and screensaver,you could even try disconnecting from the net while burning.Also you could try slowing down your burn speed to 4x or even 2x.
Your using good media,or I would say it sounds like bad media symptoms.

same thing started happenin to me...
i was using DVD Shrink, XCopy Plat. and all other soft. sh*t. i couldn't find the problem.
turns out it was the burner itslef, after a while, the skips on the backups got more and more frequent, i hate to say it but it MAY be your burner itslef (don't take my word for it) also, media has a grand effect on the quality of your backups, i came across some cr*p sold to me at a market the f*cking id*ot sold me a 25 stack of DVD-R, worst stack of discs i ever f*cking bought, false advertised aswell, but i couldn't exactly return them and demand a refund cause it was a market, buy it at your own risk. so media has an effect.

Does disabling AV and the Internet really make a difference? I'm just asking...I'll do it. It's just that I'm running a P4 3.2GHz with HT and 1 gig DDR 400 (dual channel).

I don't do it personally, but I've heard other's say it makes a difference.I would think with your specs you wouldn't have to either.

What is the make of your burner? Have you updated the firmware, because this can also cause skipping and freezing on disks, if not up to date.

I dont disconnect from the Internet or disable my antivirus but if your system contains spyware that bogg it down it might be a good idea to disconnect. My system is clean and works great with clonedvd2 and AnyDVD. I have a 4x pioneer A06 and has been my best friend, never giving me a bit of hassel. I dont mind using it 4x cuz the most time on a dvd is spent ripping to the computer not the buring part so like the other guys said try 4x...whats a couple of minutes longer?

I'm using a Plextor PX-716A to make back-up copies of DVDs that I purchased. I checked Plextor's website and made sure I had the latest firmware.

i don't disconnet the internet or virus scanning etc, i just make sure to not surf during the burn as if your webpage causes your hard drive to start churning, the burn can be affected.
Also, Maybe your player is too picky ??. i see the guys have covered virtually everything....

I find that defragging the harddrive is a good idea. I download a lot of torrents and usually defrag before I burn movies.

i havn"t read the whole thread you dont put stick"e labels on the disk do you ? if so dont mine always skipped.... print on the disk instead...
