Hi All

Yes here is another dreaded newbe with a dvd burning fault, I have been using nero express 6 for about six months and run windows xp. I have been burning dvd's for ages which have previously taken about 28-30 minutes and then suddenly it seems to have stopped burning at 2x and started burning at 1x, I have not changed any of my settings and can not work out what has happened. I have been reading through other forums for about two days and trying to sort for myself to save wasting anybodies time but have come to a complete standstill and really need help. I am sorry if you feel I am wasting your time but can honestly say that I have read over in detail similar cases.

Many Thanks For Any Replies

Adam

What is the make and model of your burner, have you updated your firmware recently, because this can make a difference in burning. Look on this site and check for your burners firmware,

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

you can access your version through the Nero InfoTool :~)

Quote:
256 MB RAM
Ram is kind of low, try to provide a Nero log of your burn. Look in Nero and then history. Try and shutdown as many running programs as possible when you burn :~)

Thanks, creaky. I have searched on this drive, and Toshiba is showing that it only writes at 2x on DVD-R media. Here are the specs on the drive.

But see if you find anything else in the log :~)

Nero version: 6.0.0.0 (Nero Express)
- that's real old by now. i'd get an update. Plus any reason for using express ?. a lot of us use nero burning rom (i don't really know the difference except ppl often say that burning rom is better).
Quote:
Recorder: <TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R6112>Version: 1031
- this firmware is up to date, however it's now 2yrs since this firmware was released, so newer media that comes out may not work in your burner. However for now you're ok as your burner & Nero know what media you're using (Fuji)
Quote:
Physical memory : 247MB (253296kB)
Free physical memory: 97MB (99972kB)
Memory in use : 60 %
- close more background apps/processes down as you're in virtual memory territory, ie virtual memory is a portion of hard disc, and your hard disc will be 'swapping' ie hard disc churn, which will affect system performance and dvd burning too as you're trying to burn a dvd from hard disc too. Bottom line is 256MB (especially under XP) is just not cutting it anymore. Try to get more memory.
Quote:
Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45)
Last address to be written: 2127439 (472:45.64)
- if you use dvd shrink, make sure to set target size (in shrink's preferences) to 4300MB therefore avoiding the very outer edge of discs.
This burn obviously is way away from the edge anyway, just thought i'd mention it in case you didn't know, for other burns..
- plus your Nero is real old now - here's how one of my burns looks re this section of logfile -

'Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45, 4489MB)'
'Last address to be written: 2142127 (476:01.52, 4183MB)'

- there you see in megabytes easier. that particular burn was only 4183MB but it wouldn't go above 4300mb cus ive got that limit set in Shrink.

Disc Manufacturer: FUJIFI - LM03
- 'fraid i don't know much about Fuji discs

I have not found any newer firmware update for this drive, Toshiba is not giving out any support. Fraid, with the newer media this could be causing a problem. I agree with memory usage should try to cut down on running background programs. Could try different media. :~)

Thanks for all your help is it not a bit strange that for ages it was burning a disc in under thirty minutes then suddenly it one day started taking twice as long, or this what usually happens?

Do you think that there might be something in the background that I have running which i dont know about? Is there anyway of me showing you what applications I have running because when I look at them it makes no scense dont know what to close down?

Many Thanks Again

Adam

In XP go to your start menu, run, type in msconfig and hit enter. When screen comes up go to startup tab and you will see everything that is loading up on computer :~)

Going back to square one,if no new processes are running, why has the burning time doubled (assuming that it is always 2x)?
Assuming the dvd writer is sound and the available ram has not changed,is it possible that the HD has become overly fragmented (from decrypting, etc)?

Hi I can see everything that starts up but I dont know what half of them are I am worried that if I try and remove the ticks from certain things I might mess things up even more. I tried a defragmation when the problem first started after reding through over people forums.

Adam

Must be horrible for you guys to be speaking to a novice very patient you both are thank you.
