I'm using Nero in conjunction with AnyDvd- both at latest versions.
I seem to be having a hard time recoding my DVD. It will start to recode, but will stop with an error message which goes something like, "Cannot read, blah.. blah. In short, the problem is with the recoding, not the burning.
I've also tried DVD shrink and Decrypter and even DVD43 (instead of AnyDVD), and still no luck. The error seem to be occuring at a specific area. I even tried just copying files and making ISOs.
Any suggestions?
I have a Fantom 16x burner (burning at 8x)and using Maxell media. I just got the burner last week and has had success with other DVDs.

dvd players are not anywhere near as picky with errors as dvd rippers are.
Do you have a reader and a writer installed on your computer, or is it just one drive (writer) that you use? Maybe try the other drive if the first one you try doesn't work.
This does sound like a defective disc to me. Can you post exactly what the log says? If you are using Nero Recode, I think it's located here: c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log (you can copy the location I just said, click Start, Run and paste it there, should take you right to it)? I know it's extremely long but that's ok. Also don't forget to edit out your serial number, usually begins with 1A21 or something to that effect.

Hey what do you know, DVDFab worked! I happened to come across DVDFab and it seemed to have done the trick- at least for the moment.
I was able to rip the DVD files on to my hdd and made an .iso file using Folder2Iso. Too bad I'm out of media for the moment and I haven't burned a copy yet using DVDShrink.
Perhaps you can help me with another problem I have. I used DVDFab and did the same thing for another DVD of mine, Ladder 49 (doesn't seem to want to copy using Nero either). I have extracted the DVD, but it seems a bit too big- about 7.1 GB. Will I be able to burn an .iso file to a 4.7GB DVD-R media? I may be able to shrink it by taking off extra features and menus, but I don't know how to do that with DVDshrink. I'm very new to the DVD-R community and have only had time with Nero. Thanks again.
OK, in DVD Shrink you'll want to click the File tab at the top, then click Open Disc Image. Find your ISO, let it analyze and click the reauthor button. Then find the one that says Movie 1 or Main Movie and drag it to the left side of the screen. Then click Backup and you should be good to go.

Great! I think that would work. But what if I want to keep the menus also, is there a way to compress that .iso using DVD Shrink before I burn it? You know, like if I was backing up a DVD with 5-7 episodes on it.
If you want to keep the menus then you can't reauthor. Try compressing the entire thing.
Open the .iso and you should see a compression number on the right.
Remove the extra Audio tracks and subpicture streams. Make sure you keep one audio track!
If you can get the compression above 60% you should be OK.
You can use the quality improvement features to help.
One other thing you can do is adjust the compression on the extras and menu:
Click on the "Menus" over on the left to highlight.
Over on the right, change the compression settings menu from Automatic to Custom Ratio.
Adjust the slider to add more compression to the menu. The smaller the number, the higher the compression. Don't get carried away, Try to stay above 50%.
Highlight the Extras and do the same thing.
Now when you highlight the Main Movie again, it should have a better compression number.
You probably noticed some other options were available on the Compression Settings Menu. You can try out some of those as well.
FYI, Shrink and Recode were both created by the same person so you probably noticed the look and work alike.
