My father recently bought a DVD with an instruction film for a milling machine he had bought for his workshop. He asked me to make a copy of it as it was expensive and he wanted to keep the original in the house and use the backup out in the workshop. I got the disk of him and noticed that it was a DVD- or +R disk rather than the usual commercial type. I used DVDshrink to copy the disk, and then give both disks to my father. A couple of days later he phoned me to say that one section of the original disk was not playing properly, ie the image was studdering and becoming pixelated etc. What was really puzzling him was that the copy plays perfectly (on the same DVD player). The only explanation I could think of was that his player prefers the make of disk I had used, but that my DVD-ROM drive in my PC was happy enough reading the original disk. Is this the likley explanation or does DVDshrink have some sort of error correction built in?

It could also be that he got dirt on the original film at that point. If the disk make was the problem, you would expect it to be a problem either all the way through or at various points sporadically, not just at one point.
As far as I know, Shrink can only compensate for the compression it has to make, but if the original is only on a standard DVD5 disk, then Shrink wouldn?t have had needed to do any compression. If the disk was damaged, or the data was corrupted, then Shrink won?t be able to do anything other than copy it to the new disk.
Maybe also get him to use a lens cleaner on his DVD, if there is something floating around in there then it could just be pot luck when you get a problem
