Ihave a Philips dvd+rw228 it doesnt seem to read dvd-r for recording purposes does the firmware have anything to do with this

i have this drive,it only uses +r and +rw disks.
i can re-assure you that this writer is the best,it has burnt every thing i've thrown at it on any disk,i've not had one coster since i brought it.
