did cd-rw kill my v12 ps2?

I have a slim PS2 (v12). It is fitted with a Matrix Infinity chip. It also has the summone fix and a pic chip to prevent laser damage.
Been working well for the last 3 months.

Decided to upgrade to the latest level of Matrix firmware so this time I burnt it to a cd-rw instead of a cdr. (Done it a few times on cdr but decided it was a waste of a disc for one use and so little data).

As soon as I put this disc in, the pic cut in and put the ps2 into standby. Now it will only play cds and goes to reset with a dvd.
Im almost 100% sure the laser is screwed, (so much for the protection!), but was it the cd-rw that did it or is that a pure coincidence?

It's possible but you've used RW's so short time that it would be quite coincidende: I used RW's very much some time ago because I tested software installing and versions with them, and my PS2 started to have lots of read errors after that. When I took it fixed repairsman said that laser head's alignment was changed so badly he had to tune it with oscilloscope, and the most possible reason was using RW discs because they will give lens a hard time much more than regular ones.
