I'm using a 3-month-old Sony DRX-710UL External DVD Writer. My PC is a Microsys with Intel Pentium 4 CPU, 2.4GHz, 512 of RAM with a 74.5GB HD (19.6GB free space). My situation is that I have used a combination of various programs (Nero 6, CloneDVD, DVD Decrypter and CopytoDVD to burn the ISO images created by DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter (I use DVD Decrypter to remove protection, DVD Shrink to shrink and create the ISO Image). Every attempt to burn the image failed, so I tried burning with DVD Decrypter using a different I/O interface under the DVD Decrypter settings menu. Using ElbyCDIO works 1 out of 10 times while the SPTI - Microsoft setting always fails. I have tried the Patin Couffin VSO Software setting and it works sometimes and other times it fails. It doesn't matter what movie I'm trying to back up, the process always fails. Let me walk you through the process:
1. I crack the DVD using DVD Decrypter (sellecting movie only files).
2. I open the files using DVD Shrink and resize the movie to fit on DVD-5 (less than 4gb cuz I have a FAT).
3. I create an image of the movie using DVD Shrink.
4. I use DVD Decrypter in the ISO Write mode at 4x speed to copy movie (sometimes even at 1x or 2x), using Taiyo Yuden 4X DVD-Rs, Sony 4X DVD-RWs and Sony 8X DVD-R as media.
5. Image starts burning and then, whenever it feels like it, the write rate falls to 0, the progress bar stops moving and then when I try to cancel the burn it never stops, so I have to shutdown the external burner because there is no response from DVD Decrypter, just an "I heard you the first time" message.
Here's what I have done to try and fix the problem:
1. Updated all drives and firmware.
2. Disabled my DVD drive (in case of conflict)
3. Uninstalled and Reinstalled all programs (DVD Shink, DVD Decrypter, Nero 6, etc.), used one burning software installed on PC at a time (uninstalled all and just left one - isolation kind of thing).
4. Tried the burner on a different system (works like a charm).
5. Changed media.
6. Safely removed burner and turned it off, restarted PC then turned on burner (NO LUCK!). Left burner on and restarted PC (NO LUCK!), tried this in various ways with no luck.
7. Tried burner on different USB jack.
8. Made sure the Primary and Secondary IDE channels are set to "DMA if available."
9. Set Secondary and Primary IDE channel to "PIO Only." 10. Unplugged the burner's power plug and plugged it right into a wall jack.
The burning process always fails!! I'm not computer savvy, but I can get things done with clear directions. Any suggestions?
