Need simple help. Tried a number of rippers in XP and it just falls over. What software will work in XP to convert DVD into AVI simply.

I have had no problems with using the article "Copy your DVD into DivX5 format - Guide for 16:9 anamorphic movies" in the articles section, all the software mentioned there works without a problem.

Same here. The only real problem I encountered was that CDex version 1.50 (Beta???) didn't save the compressed .wav file, so I used version 1.40 instead.

ive used this program with winxp and have had no problems with it, it is an all in one package. ripper coder etc..

I would say that the guide in afterdawn.com is a good one, but the easiest I have found was at http://www.doom9.org

click on "the guides" and then "divx guides" and then "divx 5".

they have links for downloading Gordian Knot, as well as everything else you will need. This is by far the easiest all in one solution, plus you can just set it and forget it, and come back 10 hours later or so and you have yourself a new divx movie.
