Ok the package says 120min, this means nothing, you can totally ignore that. It also says 4.7Gb, actually it's only 4.37Gb, marketing departments come up with 4.7. If you didn't know much about blank dvds and you saw one that said 4.7Gb and another said 4.37Gb which would you buy? Ok so they all say 4.7Gb. Many movies are bigger than 4.37Gb, so they need to be compressed to fit. Many programs compress, DVD2One, Clone2, Recode2, all cost money. There is a free program DVD Shrink. Shrink has fairly good quality, but as in any program as compression goes up generally quality goes down.

Keep in mind that manufacturers quote the capacity of a writable DVD disc in decimal (base 10) rather than binary (base 2) notation so a 4.7 GB disc stores 4.7 billion bytes [4:700,000,000 bytes ÷ 1000 = 4,700,000 KB ÷ 1000 = 4,700 MB ÷ 1000 = 4.7 GB] . Expressed in binary notation (as is typical with CD-R, CD-RW and most operating systems) the same disc has a capacity of roughly 4.38 GB [4:700,000,000 bytes ÷ 1024 = 4,589,844 KB ÷ 1024 = 4,482.27 MB ÷ 1024 = 4.38 GB] .

Most dvd's anymore are dvd9 (DL). Even though the movie may only be 100 min long by the time they put all the other garbage (previews, trailers, the making of, music videos, etc.) on the dvd it is usually well over 120 min. Sometimes you can backup the movie only and no compression will be necessary but anything over 120 min or 4.38 gb will require compression. Also keep in mind the audio can not be compressed so you can loose some mb by removing unwanted audio streams.

Fuji +Rs, made in Japan, are Taiyo Yuden, the very best. I've burned a few hundred of them with excellent results. Sometimes I burn the 8x at 12 or 16x, and they always play on my stand alone dvd players

@dude845,

The "FUJI/Taiyo Yuden" is a top notch media, you can't go wrong with that. Honestly in my opinion, FUJI/Taiyo Yuden is as great as MAXELL and Verbatim. Personally, I think the FUJI/TY is slightly better than the SONY brand. However, just make sure it's a DVD+R, and make sure they all says: "MADE IN JAPAN", then you won't have to worry about getting any coasters, unless it's an operator's fault.

:) i've used BOTH the fuji and sony MIJ TYs~ they are equal in my own opinion...but, yes so far, make sure it's MADE IN JAPAN like the others have said, otherwise, if made in taiwan, those are DEFINITELY NOT TYs, and in my opinion again, are not as high quality~ :)

on both the MIJ fuji or sony, at least THUS FAR FOR ME, i have hundreds of them in either 50pk or 100pk spindles will code out as in my sig. YUDEN000T02~ great stuff~

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

I don't know if they are good any more. I bought several 100 pack spindles about 6 weeks ago, they were TYs, made in Japan. But I went in the store a week ago and all -R and +R and now made in Taiwan. I'm not sure what they are now.

Those are awfully expensive. You can find verbatum's or genuine TY's
for quite a bit less. Check out supermediastore.com, rima.com,
meritline.com, or newegg.com. I bought a 50 pk of verbatum DVD+R hub
printables for $29.95 free shipping w/ a $10 mail in rebate on top of
that. $19.95 less tax.
