Gamecube troubleshooting....

My gamecube, jet black, is about two and a half years old.
It is not, and has never been, modded in any way.
It works fine 90% of the time but with some games it just gives me disc read errors at random intervals. Not all games, mind you, just certain ones.
Soul calibur, smash brothers, and resident evil 4.
The rest work fine.
I've cleaned the fans, and cleaned the discs (no scratches, very little dust), but to little avail. I pop in these games and they'll work for a random amount of time (sometimes 5 minutes, other times an hour), and it seems like any time it has to do any heavy loading is when its most likely to quit.
Any ideas?
Also, how do I properly clean the laser without screwing it up?

I get errors too. None of the senior members are replying to my thread either. Maybe we need to help ourselves. My thread is http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/202845 (a.k.a HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!).
As for your problem, how long have you had the discs? If they're new they could be defective. Otherwise, you may need a new laser.

hi to both of you.
most of us know that DREs are the cause of burner/media/speed/iso.
for original dvds Nintendo can help better.
you must be lucky in your country because here(Greece) we luck of good support.(not sure for technical, but for the rest..........)
you must alredy know that GC's ventilation system must be clear.
perhaps your pot is too low(i'm asking too.not sure)?

You mostlikely have a dirty laserlense.
take some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip
add some rubbing alcohol to the q-tip and
sweep gently the laserlense with the q-tip
notice use fair amount of the alcohol so that the q-tip
ISN'T dripping of alcohol, too much might damage the cube
internals if drips of alcohol is applied.
then use the other end of the q-tip to dry the laser lense
BE gentle!
do not add any pressure to the laserlense

Alright thanks
As for the discs, one in particular i have replaced brand new numerous times and it still gives the error.
I'm really starting to think its an internal gamecube problem now, because its doing it randomly with all games.
It just seems to do it more often with games that are scratched.
I'll try cleaning the lens then see what happens. I hope that is enough.

I cleaned the laser as recommended. After I dried it with the dry end of the q-tip, i let it sit powered off for a couple of hours.
It seems to have worked so far!
I've played for about 20 minutes and no errors.
I'll give it a few more hours and if nothing happens then its safe to say that its fixed.
I'll keep you posted.

It can be a bad media or bad burning too, not should forget those options...

You're right, my laser must be dying. I'm going to try to get my computer geek cousin to help me recalibrate it. I found a tutorial, but my mom isn't good at tinkering with computers. Thanks. I'll keep you posted.

I have almost the same problem, except it affects every game I have (all of them are store-bought, one of them is brand new) and the errors are not random. It takes about 30 mins for the first error to occur, and then there are constant errors after that. I can read the disc again if I open and close the door, but the next time it needs to read the disc, I get in error. If I keep using it I will get an error that requires me to reset it. What is going wrong? My GameCube is only a year old, but it is used alot. It is not modified in any way.

I would say that it's a bad laserunit, just call nintendo and ask if they would replace it cheap, I have been playing with my cube since it was released, and I've had zero problems with the original games.

The problem is a dead fan. If I have a fan blowing into the intake vent it works all day with no problems
