why does my comp. shut down in the middle of using dvd shrink?

i've been copying dvd's for some time now & i've never seen this problem!! In the middle of encoding w/dvd shrink my computer just shuts off & upon restarting it no error message is displayed. Any thoughts? Anyone? Help Please!!

Is your computer only shuting down will running shrink? If not it's possible you have a virus.

Could be a heat issue. Make sure you have adequate ventilation and that your cpu and case fan are working.

thanks, not an overheating issue, when my cpu is hot, a voice tells me when i restart (that problem happened last week). No virus, it's not on the internet. I recently installed a midi controller, now i re-installed DVD Shrink & i think it works again, so it was one of those two things... i think...

are you doing anything else in the background? i find trying to start winamp 1/2 way thru encoding crashes my pc - so i dont do it :)
also you dont want it running whilst burning anyway

Are you using XP?
If so, it may be that something is causing a system failure, and XP is automatically restarting. Check this setting:
- Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties"
- Select the "Advanced" tab, and under "Start up and Recovery" click "Settings"
- Make sure the box that says "Automatically Restart" (under "System failure") is UNCHECKED.
So, while this may be causing your system to restart without warning, something else is making your machine unstable.

i unchecked the box. Tried Again. Failed Again. Please Help. (Specs. OS: XP Pro
CPU: 3.2 amd
RAM: 1g
HD: 2-250 2-160 (@7200) (Storage (where the dvd temp files go) 1-40 (@10000) (OS HD)
Drives: NEC 3520A 16X Dual Layer & DVD-Rom (?)

P.S. This has only recently started. I've been burning w/these programs & drives since Feb. of this year. I hooked up an m-audio midi controller right before this started as well.

brianball...unchecking the box just made it so your computer wouldn't (or shouldn't) automatically restart on failure. There's still something causing your computer to crash, most likely your midi controller (or drivers or something).
I don't know what you can do about it, really...check the controller's manufacturer's website, and see if it's known to cause problems?
Maybe reinstall your ripping/burning apps?

maybe you got a corrupt download of Shrink. Try to download it again. (I know you said that computer isn't on the net, but you must have internet access to get the program and post here.)

Sounds like your power supply. You should be able to check your voltages in your bios. This is also a pretty cool site I learned a long time ago you can never have enough power. http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/
Maybe unhook the midi controller and see if the problem goes away.

the 2 most likely things i can think of are overheating and power supply, both of which have been suggested...

My power calculation is "379 watts" minimum requirement according to that website. My power supply is provided by an "antec sonata" enclosure TruePower 380Watt ATX12V power supply. Maybe I'm pushing it too much, bigger power supply wouldn't hurt. On a side note, I just used CloneDVD & no problem of the sort was present....

the problem with Shrink is it's a resource hog. It will use all your RAM up on you, thus making your computer create more heat. There are temp monitoring programs out there like Motherboard Monitor and that way you will be able to see if its a heat issue. My comp gets pretty hot, and if you live in the northern hemisphere it's gettin into the hot months, so that makes it worse.

i'm lucky with my PSU as it's only an 192W PSU, my system doesn't need any more than that as i have onboard video so don't need huge amounts of wattage just to keep PC running!
