Heres the thing while playing about with sub rip i was trying an easier way to get an srt than going through the typing each lettter route .... which has its limitations as letters are more often than not wrongly assigned
so i will explain as best as i can remember what I did
first i opened ifo (not directory that is the idx file not the sub)
then i saved subpictures as BMP's
press start and saved as sonic scenarist
let it do its thing
then went to set output format..(i change from one to another and back again).I can't remember EXACTLY what I did but somehow I ended up with a perfect srt file; commas exclamation marks, everything perfect. if anyone has any idea what I might have done do let me know.

my brain hurts

Convert subtitles to SubRip (*.srt) format using Subtitle workshop

Note the input and output frame rate settings . Knowing the length of the DVD (from its box), you can check the time of the last subtitle to see whether it was in NTSC or PAL. Finally, save it as SubRip.

Convert subtitles (*.srt) to a bitmap stream (*.sup) using SRT2SUP

a) Open *.srt file
b) Select Settings/Global settings and change the color and font that you want to use for your subtitles. For example, use a black transparent background, white letters, a silver outline (or set it to 0) and silver anti-aliasing.
c) Select ?All? subtitles
d) Save the sup file ? this can take some time.

@yallowsam: there is no such "magic" in SubRip, you just had some char matrix loaded and it worked well with that particular DVD. You can reuse char matrices between DVDs (try mine from http://sr2.mytempdir.com/67113 ), but it doesn't always work. However, with the "best guess" and "fill matrix from text" features, you should be able to type less than before.
