I am running XP SP2 and have a problem with downloaded files that are made up of files with *.part01.rar, *.part02.rar, etc extensions. Winrar 3.50 beta allows me to extract them to an avi file but when I try to convert this using DVDSanta or even just try to run the avi file in media player it crashes, saying that media player has encountered a problem and needs to close. If I download a compressed file with a single *.rar file and several *.r00, *.r01, etc files I don't have a problem running the file in media player or converting it to a DVD in DVDSanta.

Could anybody help me with this problem as I am lost why it should happen.

I;d doubt your problem has anything to do with WinRAR. The AVI file will come out extracted the same way it was packed in the first place so the filenames of the archives doesn;t make any difference.

Try a couple of things for me.

1. Open the file in a software dvd player and see if it plays it (Ive often had problems with AVI files using WMP)

2. Download GSpot and get codec information, if you need a codec, GSpot will tell you (if you dont need it it will say it's installed)

3. Open the file in VirtualDub, any warnings? (bare in mind if you have VBR MP3 audio chances are VirtualDub will giv an error, you can ignore that)

When I run GSpot on the AVI file it says I have 3 compatible codecs installed and 2 for the audio. When I run the same file with VirtualDub it says 'VBR Audio stream detected'-VirtualDub has detected improper VBR audio encoding in source AVI file etc. Do you still want to rewite the header. When I press yes I get 'Couldn't locate decompresser for format XVID (unknown). VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. Only 'Direct stream copy' is available for this video.' It then lets me produce a *.wav file without a problem. I also tried to preform the next step with TMPGEnc Plus 2.5. I chose PAL format and when I tried to pick the video source file I got File "F:\video\asteroids-****.avi" can not open, or unsupported.

Sorry, I also tried to run the file in PowerDVD but it just crashes the same as media player or DVDSanta.

can u install that codec? have u installed a codec pack inb the past like mino or anything along those lines??
