Hi there...brand new to these forums, but it looks like there is a ton of great info here! I'm doing a movie project where I will be reediting a lot dvds together to form a trailer clip. I'll need pretty high resolution for this. I'm using ImTOO to rip the dvds to avi files, but there are so many options for codecs/compressors I don't know where to start! What is the best codec for my purposes? Ideally I'd like to try to get a 2 hour movie down to 4 gigabytes, so I can burn it onto an info dvdr and use it when I need it (since I'll be using a ton of different movies, I can't have them cluttering up my hard drive, just want to use one at a time. I've tried divx but the file sizes seem pretty small and the quality seems like it could be better.

Bottom line: When ImToo asks what codec/format I want to have my output file be, what should I select if I am looking for quality over file size?

Thanks!

First off there is absolutly no Need to Rip the DVD and convert it to AVI format because all this Does is Degrade the Final Quality and Waste a Bunch of Tame that can be used doing something constructive...

You should Rip the DVD to your Hard Drive without Converting to AVI, I usually use "DVD Decryptor" or "Smartripper" for this and I usually Rip the Movie as a Single Big VOB file with One audio Track (There are ways to do this in "DVD decryptor" by setting the "File Splitting" to "None")....

After you have each movie ripped to your Hard Drive load each VOB file into a Native Mpeg editor called "Womble Mpeg Video Wizard 2005" which will let you edit the VOB files the way you want useing clips from as Many VOB files as you want and even add Effects and Transitions between Clips and when you have your Project set up the way you want with all of the Clips in the Correct order ect you render your Project as a Mpeg-2 file(VOB and Mpeg-2 are the same format so there is no quality Loss editing with this Program) which will only take a few minutes.....

After you have your project rendered to a Mpeg-2 file you have Two options for Putting it back on to DVD...You could load the Mpeg-2 file into "DVD_Shrink" and use the "Re-Author" mode to Burn the Mpeg-2 file to DVD and to Shrink it if it needs to be Shrunk....

Or you can load the Mpeg-2 file into a DVD Authoring Program like "DVDLab Pro" or "Tmpgenc DVD Author" and add some Menu"s and Chapters and Burn the Project to DVD...Useing this Method you will have a Nicer looking DVD because it will have Menu"s and you will be able to Navigate through the Movie useing it"s Chapters were with the "DVD-Shrink" method you won"t have any menu"s or Chapters....

This way will Be Faster because you won"t Have to spend time converting to AVI first and the Quality will be MUCH Better because you will not be Encodeing to AVI first.....
