Any sites or any members on this board that could assist me in learning what are all the different formats and what are the benefits and consequences of each?

For example what is .rar, .iso and others. What is the benefits of wma music formats over mp3's? Things of that nature. THe reason I am wondering is because I was on edonkey the other day and notice that different files had different formats and I was told I would need certain softwares just to open certain formats and then burn them onto playable cd's or dvd's

"ALL" Formats need to have different Software Installed to Play them ...The Software you need is called a "Codec" and for every different Format you need a Different codec....

Rar and ISO are not Video or audio Formats, the "Rar" format is pretty Much the same as the "Zip" format which is just for Compressing any sort of File so it is smaller ...

The ISO format is a Disk Image Format and is Not a Compression format...ISO files are an Image of a CD or DVD and are Generally Just Burned to a CD or DVD, They contain the Exact same File Structure that is Found on CD-Rom disks and DVD disks.....

As For WMA and MP3 they are Audio Compression formats and generally do not have much advantage over the other accept for Compatibility and File size...To Playback WMA Files you need to have the "Windows Media" Codecs installed and to playback MP3 files you need to have a "Mp3" codec installed....

If you have any specific Questions then ask away...Cheers

To the above guy: Can I just mention that you are one of the most helpful guys I have come across on this board. I mean you really explained things to me in layman terms and really made me understand. I am not being a wise-ass here. I really trully thank you because you really helped me out and all without making me feel stupid. I hope and wish that more would answer questions for the newbies as you have. Again thankyou.
