Dell Inspiron 8600 Sony VRDVC10 conflict?

Hi there,
I have found this site very helpful so far. I am having a problem with my Dell Inspiron 8600 and my Sony VRDVC10 dvd burner. I run DVD Decrypter with no problem. When it comes time to use DVD Shrink I get the cyclic redundency error. Sometimes it will also give me an error that states it cannot find the file. However on my girlfriends Dell Dimension 2400 it will back anything up with no problem. Does anyone know if perhaps there is a conflict between the two devices perhaps? I just wish I could figure it out so I could take my dvd backup process on the go. I thank anyone for their help!

Hi xxjasonxx, welcome to aD,
There is of course no conflict between your burner and your PC.
I suggest you concentrate on your media and using a comprehensive guide to work with.
As for quality, A good grade, Hi-quality media is needed for DVD reproduction ! Phillips, Fuji +R's (not the -R's), Sony, TDK, HP, "Branded" RiData Go3's, Maxell +R (not the -R's as they cannot be trusted), Sony, Ritek G04 and G05's (not the 01's or the 02's), Verbatim - DataLife, Verbatim - DataLife Plus and media boasting "Advanced Metal AZO" BUT, it must say "Advanced METAL AZO", this indicates a superior dye and dye application on a good composite disc.As a general rule, the majority of discs manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, Mitsubishi, RICOH and most Ritek are good bets. Look closely at those discs we recommended, you will see some dye types not listed by us. Those are poor risks even though they are made by the same company. Prices online from SuperMediaStore.com, Meritline.com OR Newegg.com have gotten Ritek G04 starting at about a $ .36 (USD) a disc - and just recently, a "Super Sale" had 100 Taiyo Yuden discs, 4X for $.25(USD)ea. PLUS they all have an excellent return policy.
A little information on a CRC error:
A CRC error deals with a disc 99% of the time and the other 1% of the time it is from the drive itself.
A CRC error is usually received when attempting to burn to a crappy piece of media. Using a decent quality media will eliminate this error. A CRC error can also be seen when trying to rip a damaged or faulty OR a downright dirty or scratched DVD disc. Clean the disc, attempt to recover the disc using CDCheck.

Finally, if indeed it comes from your drive, sometimes just a laser lens cleaning with either canned air OR a Laser cleaning disc will solve the problem. All that said and done, you may have to check the burner / DVD ROM in another machine to sea if it is at fault. Very rare BUT possible.

Thanks Pete,
The problem is that I am using Ritek brand, and they are working on the other computer but not my laptop. After the files from the dvd are already ripped to my hard drive and I try to put them onto dvd using shrink along side Nero. It will get about half way for it's analysing process, then all of a sudden the good old cyclic redundancy error hits me. Now the kicker is, I do everything the same on my girlfriends computer, I use the same dvd burner because it is external, same Ritek dvds, same original dvd, everything even version of decrypter and shrink. I've been all over the net, searching for answers. I've tried numerous programs to rip and burn as well. No luck. Of course any method works on the desktop. I am just stumped.

do you have nero InCD loaded on yours?
also do any of the pcs have roxio loaded?
(sorry just re-read you again - its when you compress with shrink and you dont even get to burn?) yes this is wierd?????

Hi there Rotary,
Nope, no InCD or Roxio on any of them. Yes exactly, after the DVD Decrypter program has ripped the dvd to the hard drive I next use DVD Shrink. Now When I first try to open the files in DVD Shrink, it starts the analysis phase. During this phase it gives me the cyclic redundancy check. I found it quite strange that when reading from the hard drive it had a cyclic redundancy check. Could this be a sign of a bad hard drive? What I meant by any method works on the desktop is that any and all ripping programs I have tried work on the desktop computer I own, but my laptop which is having the problem will not work with any of the programs.
Here is an exact example of what it tells me:
DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.
Failed to read the file "C:\THE_MATRIX_16X9LB_N_AMERICA\VIDEO_TS\VTS_02_1.VOB"
Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
That is what it tells me when I try to open the files from hard drive with DVD Shrink on the laptop. Thanks for all the help guys, you are great.

can dvd decrypter rip it ok on the laptop? and did you try iso and file modes?

1. Running Programs
Make sure you quit all running background programs, such as anti-virus software.
Windows 95 Users
Use the Ctrl-Alt-Del function to quit all the programs using the Task Manager, EXCEPT for the Explorer, systray, and your recording software
Windows 98/ME Users
Select [Start] -> [Run], then input "msconfig". Disable everything under the [Startup] tab, except "system tray'.
Windows 2000/XP Users
Open the Task Manager, then select the program/s under the [Application] tab, then click [End Task].
2. Drive Connection
Other devices may be interfering with the CD-R/RW drive. Disconnect all other removable devices, then try recording again. If there is still a problem, try the following.
Optimal Hardware Configuration
All hard drives are placed on the Primary IDE, check that the drives are correctly set as master/slave. CD-ROM/CD-R/RW drives are placed on the Secondary IDE, set the recording drive as the "master". If you are using a USB or IEEE devices, disconnect them.
Update your chipset
Windows 95/98/ME Users
Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click on [Device Manager], then click to open [Hard Disk Controllers]. You will find: the Primary IDE Channel controller, the Secondary IDE Channel controller and a brand name controller, e.g. Intel, SIS, VIA, etc. The brand name controller is what needs to be updated. Please visit their website to obtain these updates.
Windows NT/2000/XP Users
Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click [Device Manager] on the [Hardware] tab, then click to open the [IDE ATA/ATAPI (hard disk) controllers] section. You will find: the Primary IDE Channel controller, Secondary IDE Channel controller, and a brand name controller, e.g. Intel, SIS, VIA, etc. The brand name controller is what needs to be updated. Configure Windows
Make sure that your operating system has been fully updated. Visit the Microsoft website to acquire these updates.
3. ASPI Manager
Check your ASPI layer configuration. Your recording program is likely to use the standard windows ASPI layer, which has been replaced by another ASPI layer of yet another recording program. Make sure you have the original windows ASPI layer in use and retry. If the problem persists, contact the drive maker.
4. DMA Settings
Setting DMA mode:
Windows 95/98/ME Users
Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click on [Device Manager], then click on [CD-ROM]. This will expand to show the CD drives on your system. Right click on a drive and select [Properties] from the menu. Click on the [Settings] tab and check that the [DMA] option is enabled. Repeat this procedure for the remaining CD drives.
Win NT/2000/XP Users
Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click [Device Manager] on the [Hardware] tab, then click to open the [IDE ATA/ATAPI (hard disk) controllers] section. You will find: the Primary IDE Channel controller, Secondary IDE Channel controller. Complete the following procedure:
Right click on the Primary IDE controller and select [Properties] from the menu.
Select the [Advanced Settings] tab. Check that the [Transfer Mode] for both devices is set to [DMA if available].
Repeat this for Secondary IDE controller.
Note: In some cases older CD-ROM drives will not support DMA mode. In that case please set both devices to PIO mode.
5. Disc
Recording errors often occur when the disc is dirty, or has fingerprints or scratches. If an error occurred during test simulation (before actual recording), clean the disc. If you are getting recording errors, try the following.
Use a different blank, recordable disc.
Use a different manufacturer's disc.
Ensure the disc is clean before recording:
Remove all fingerprints, dirt, and dust from the shiny side of your disc using a nonabrasive cloth with a mild, nonabrasive soap solution.
Wipe the disc from the center to the edge of the disc.
Dry the disc completely.
Error during file verification
If an error occurred when the files were being verified, record the same files again using a different disc.
Read error when copying a disc
When copying a disc, if an error occurred while reading data from the original disc, the original disc may be scratched or dirty.
Try cleaning the disc.
Remove all fingerprints, dirt, and dust from the shiny side of your disc using a nonabrasive cloth with a mild, nonabrasive soap solution.
Wipe the disc from the center to the edge of the disc.
Dry the disc completely.
Try using a different source drive.
To change the drive you use to read your disc, click the Change button when asked to insert a source disc into your drive tray.
Select the drive you wish to use from the drop-down menu.
Insert your disc into the new drive.
Try using copying the disc using one drive as both the source and destination drive.
When you use your recorder to both read and write to your disc, B's Recorder GOLD creates an image file of the entire disc to your hard drive and then copies that temporary file onto your blank disc. This can be helpful if the drive you are using to read your original disc is slow or unreliable.
If the problem persists, contact the drive maker.
6. Drive
If you have tried Actions 1 through 5 above, there may be a problem with your drive. Contact the drive maker with details of the error code. If the 5th and 6th digit of the error code is 80 through FF, then the error code is maker unique. The descriptions of these error codes differ depending on the maker.

that's very wierd. Decrypter seems to had had no problem grabbing movie to disk, yet Shrink barfs. That's very strange, i'd try a defrag first, just to rule out the obvious.

Well thanks guys. I have tried it all but nothing has changed. I just don't know what is wrong. I guess I could just contact Dell, since I did buy the burner there as well as the computer.

Remember that the last time anything was done to DVD Shrink that dealt with ripping was back in July 2004. A lot has changes since then. Though I haven't read your entire thread, if DVDD will rip it to your HD and DVD Shrink will not, . . . I would just take that in stride.
About the only thing Rotary didn't ask you to check is:
Attempt to ascertain whether you have a 40-wire IDE cable running to your drive OR an 80-wire IDE cable. It is a major problem iffin it's only a 40-wire cable.
