Why is there such a wide difference in the quality of DVD-R by brand? I recently bought some Traxdata classics which I have to say where excellent. They even played on my Toshiba SD-9000 which is a VERY fussy player. I couldnt get any more of these so I bought some Datasafe classics which it says uses the same dye. But these will only play in black and white. I know its not a Region issue as I used IFOEdit to keep the back up as a region 2 (the same as the original) therefore I have to assume its the media. The question is though, why in general is there such a difference in quality as to whay will work and what wont. Cant the manufacturers come together to agree on a standard? Why is there a need for such a variety of dye colours etc.

Why does car manufacturers have such big differences in quality -- BMW X5 and Lada Samara are like from different planets, why? For some reason, some people prefer to buy cheap-o even though they know that the quality doesn't match with the more expensive brands. Simple economics.

Yes but both the Lada and X5 will fulfill the same basic function of transportation, its just the method that differs. Where as certain brands of DVD wont work correctly or perform their basic function. It isnt even a question of cost as a some of the cheaper brands perform better than the more expensive variety. I appreciate that its difficult to get an effective DVD to do all tasks, using the same analagy the Samara wont go across country like the X5 might but it would be easier if DVD's where manifactured to two standards, data storage and multi media. This could then lead to developing the best dye specific to the application and therefor reduce amount of disks that are wasted.

You would think that because there is supposed to be a standard that has to be met to meet the dvd-r, dvd+r , etc. that all such disks would work the same in all devices that also meet those same specifications. But then mankind never seems to get anything to meet the specifications we set forth.

I think there will be if you remember when cd burners there was the same problem with crappy media but now you can get a 50 pack of hival cd-rs at office max free with a mail in rebate. well not now but the sale was on a while back and probably will be again in the future.

Also I've heard talk of a dvd burner comming out that will burn dvd - and + rs I'm sure the whole dvd burning scene will be more concrete in a year or so but by then, like always there will be something bigger, badder and better out.
