Office Depot has a sale on these discs. The price of 17.99 for a spindle of 50 is a good deal I think but they are made in Taiwan. I have noticed this at other stores too that when the spindle is 50 they are made in Taiwan. I have had the most success with Maxell (Made in Japan) and Verbatim. What are your thoughts about the Maxell's manufactured in Taiwan. I'm a little leery.

btitus: I share your concern, also. I have 4-5 spindles of the Maxell Goldtops MIJ which code out as mxl rg03. Maxell has since switched suppliers to Taiwan. I read one post where one individual bought some Maxell 8x -R Goldtops made in Taiwan and they coded out as Ritek G05.

I just completed a 50-pack of Maxell goldtop coded RG02 and only had 1 coaster -- the last blank on the spindle. My son used some coded RG03 and liked them.

tsquare43: The rgo2 are Maxell 4x -Rs and are generally referred to as "yellowtops". The rgo3 are Maxell 8x -Rs and are generally referred to as "goldtops"...They are a slightly different shade..I know, they all look like "mustard tops" to me. You would think they would use a more differentiating color..Your rgo2s and rgo3s were probably made in Japan.
Would still like to know how the Maxell -Rs made in Taiwan code out.

I was at Office Depot this morning and I bought the last four spindles of MXLR-G03 MIJs. All the rest were made in Taiwan (Ritech G05.) The MXLR G03s are great media. The Ritechs are so so. I would pass on the Riteck at any price but grab the Maxell MIJs in a minute.

I will add that the +R's were the ones that were made in Taiwan. I didn't even look at the -R's as they have proven to not be compatible with my burner.

Are you sure you don't have that backwards. The dash or minus discsa are compatible with almost all players, the + are the one that need to be bitset tp DVD-Rom for compatiblity. All the Maxell +8x I have seen were Made in Japan code Maxell 002.

When I bought a spindle of -R's I could not get them to work with my burner. Of course, it have been a case of "operator error!" The +R's have always worked so I just stick with them.

... I have purchased many spindles of Maxell discs from Office Depot ... the 4X discs seem to be made in Taiwan while the 8X discs are usually made in Japan ... One way to tell the origin of Maxell media is to look at the barcode - the Japanese produced discs will have "Made in Japan" printed next to the barcode ... The +R Taiwanese discs will ID out as RICOHJPN which is good media, but still a step below the Japanese Maxell/Hitachi produced +R discs which are first class stuff all the way ...

So, would you recommend them? I trust Maxell and I believe the quality would be decent but I just didn't want to waste that money. The only other store in my area that sells Maxells at a decent price is Wal-Mart. They have spindles of 25 for 13.88 and they are Made in Japan.

... I've burned 100s of them without any problems .. I'd rate them right up there with Verbatim, Sony and RiData ... I don't know about Taiyo Yuden since I haven't used enough of them (only 50) ...

The Walmarts around here don't carry any Maxells to speak of. Prices are high also. The best deal is at Office Depot this week.

If the +r are Maxell002 then they are the same as the Made in Japan. If that's that case I'll see if there are any left and pick them up.

Good morning friends. I recently stocked up on Maxell's when Staple's had a good price on them. So far they are working very well for me; the only coasters I have had was because of my errors here as I'm new to burning.
The Maxell +R 8x's that I bought are coded as Hitachi-Maxell 002. The tops are a silver-gray color. On top of the barcode, "Made in Japan" is written.
The Maxell -R 8x's that I bought are coded as Ritek G05. These are a yellow-gold colored top. I don't have the package wrapper here now, but if I remember correctly I believe this media was made in Japan also.
If it's any assistance to anyone, I'm burning with a Plextor 716A; and it appears that the Plextor is quite happy with both of these Maxell medias as they are burning with no errors. They also test out perfect on that Plextools too.
Take care everyone....

I've used "MAXELL 8X DVD+R" (Made In Japan), Disc ID: MAXELL-002-00 to back up DVD movies and PS2 games flawlessly in the past and still using them. Honestly, I think it's as good as the FUJI DVD+R or Taiyo Yuden (Made In Japan) as well. Just thought that I'll add to the thread since I mostly use MAXELL and FUJI to do all my back up that's all.

Are the discs that are marked as Made in Taiwan coding as being decent quality? I noticed on the package that under the Made in Taiwan tag it says Made in Japan on the actual wrapper.

I went ahead and grabbed a pack of the Maxell and they coded as being manufactured by RichohJapan. They are labeled as 4x but I had three successful burns at 8x.

Ah... nice going. My +R and -R Maxell's manufactired in Japan are burning quite well too. I also picked up some Maxell +RW's to experiment with, as I'm still learning DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink so this way I wont be burning coasters while I experiment with settings here. That +RW media that I picked up is labled as made in Taiwan, but they are working very well here for me on this new Plextor 716A burner. I'm still experimenting and learning that Plextools utility too, lol... But, I'm getting there slow but sure though. My tests that I ran through Plextools on the burned media that I did returned superb results, which surprised me as this burning is rather new to me.
Good luck with your burning my friend.. take care.

Thank you; I'll check that out. These RW's are working out well for me. Gives me a great opportunity to play around with different settings and levels of shrinking so I can better learn this burning stuff.
I've got Decrypter pretty much figured out, but I have to fine tune my skills with Shrink some more. I'm having some challenges with learning proper compression levels and getting the backup to fit.
Talk to you later btitus; good luck with your burning...

Me too... I am so glad I found it. I was actually doing a google search and found it that way. I've already met some nice people who have answered my posts and offered their expertise and willingness to help out a new guy. I spend a few hours here many days, reading through the posts... I've learned quite a bit here, but most importantly too is that I've met some nice people here.
Maybe we both will be burning pros before we know it! Take care.
