I just installed the NEC 3520A... when i boot or reboot the PC... it sees the drive in the BIOS... the PC stalls after trying to read the 3520A drive as the first boot device.

I went into the BIOS and set the drive to NONE... when i reboot/boot it dosent see the drive and windows comes on and works fine... then when i go into My Computer, the IS THERE labeled "DVD-R DRIVE"

What is going on here?

Thanks all!

The reason it's stalling is because it's trying to boot windows from the drive first instead of your harddrive where the os is installed. Your dvd drive should not be your first boot device unless you have a copy of windows in it everytime you turn on your pc.

yes, it works just fine i believe... i just burned a cd-rw using it and it came out just fine (used Nero)

my bios WAS set at Auto... i went in and changed it to NONE so the bios dosent see the drive, windows boots up just fine and sees the drive too.

it dosent make any sence... thoughts?

I just replaced my old CD-R Drive with this 3520A... they are both set to Master, everything is exactly the same as it was.

Primary Master - CD-Rom Drive
Primary Slave - DVD-Rom Drive
Secondary Master - 3520A
Secondary Slave - none

SCSI
Primary Master - hdd
Primay Slave - none
Secondary Master - hdd

This is the way it's always been... this is why it dosent make sence to me.
Secondary Slave - none

but the question is, why was it stalling after reading the drive as the first boot device?

Whoa, B2D327! Who bit you in the butt? There's no reason for both of your smarta** remarks. Stuff like that is what makes these threads go downhill in a hurry. He said everything was the same as all he did was replace a burner. I think he understood what was said, but was curious as to why it happened. I would be too, because I recently replaced a cd burner with the NEC 3520A and mine booted without any problems. I'm curious why it read it the way it did also.

Exactly tsquare43, that is the question that has yet to be answered...

The CD-Rom's have been the 1st boot device on my machine since i installed the new mobo 3 years ago... since then i've added a regular DVD-rom (which read fine as the first boot device and went straight to Windows after not seeing a bootable disk)... later-on added a CD-R drive (again worked fine)... when recieveing the DVD-R drive, i simpily replaced the CD-R drive (which is causeing the PC to stall while attempting to read a bootable disk only in the new NEC drive).

Of course changing the 1st boot device to the hdd fixes the problem... but that dosent answer the question as to why the problem occured in the first place.

I wish I had an answer for you but I am not nearly as well versed as a good number of people here when it comes to why does the pc do what it does.

When I installed my 3520A, I took out my cd burner (which was not the 1st. drive recognized on boot-up) and replaced it with the 3520A -- simply a 1-for-1 swap. Very happy with the burner and actually bought a black one for my son when his Dell unit went south the week after the warranty expired.

"Dell unit went south the week after the warranty expired."
Ahh i know how that is... My car's engine blew 1 month after that Powertrain warrenty expired. errrrrrr

anyway, Just a thought but would you by chance be able to test this problem out on your mahince seeing as though we have the same 3520A?

I'd like to know if everyone experiences this problem or if it's just my machine.

Thanks again!

I'll help if I can. If you are talking about your machine reading the burner 1st. on startup, mine doesn't do this. What would you like for me to check?

well, can you go into your BIOS and change the First Boot Device to the CD-ROM... then your 2nd Boot Device to HDD-0...

then see if your machine actually goes to Windows or if it stalls while trying to read the CD-ROM (first boot device).

thanks man!

i had that same problem with a customer's computer but with a sony cd writer. if id in bios would pause for a bit before finishing loading into windows. disable in the bios no pause. tried it on its own cable same thing. when not id in bios but is id in windows. as he also had a problem burning cds but no problem reading so replaced drive with a lg cd writer.
