DOLBY DIGITAL SOUND ISSUE! AVI FILE!!!

How do I convert and Avi file that is Dolby Digital (surround sound, where the music and action is much louder that dialouges) to a regular one level sound Avi file. It's too much of a bother to raise the volume higher and then lower it all of a sudden? I use Nero to burn my movies, is there a setting in Nero to keep the volume throughout the entire movie consistent?

In Nero there is Audio Settings to Dolby Digital, Automatic and then there is LPCM, what's Automatic and LPCM??
