I recently aquired a film from a freind, but the file has no 'source filter', well at least my media player cannot locate it. Is there anyway round this? Any input will be apreciated.

What container? Also what codecs? Lack of a source filter sounds like you don't have a splitter installed for the container. Once you have a splitter, you need decoders for whatever streams.

I think it was in a container called Matroska, and i dont know how to find out about codecs that are required. I found a splinter which i installed, now i get sound, but i still dont get video. The new error message is, that 'media player clasic could not render some of the pis in the graph' i have no idea what that means :). Please help as much as you can. Thanks

Media Player Classic has a built in mkv splitter so you shouldn't need one, although I guess it doesn't handle newer files like those with native AVC.

Matroska shell extension can tell you what streams the file contains. Otherwise there are numerous apps for identifying media files.
