hello all. i have these Vhs tapes that i made when i was in ANP 2 for college about 2 yrs ago. I was wondering if there was a way to convert those to a Dvd+r? i want to be able to take them to work and just put them into my laptop to study. What programs & necessities do i need in order to do this? I am new to this so please if u can be very detail in your help.. thx so much friend...

For a laptop, the easiest to use is a hardware mpeg-2 device such as the Hauppauge PVR-USB 2.
It comes with all the software you need.
You just have to purchase a cable to go from your VCR's outputs to the Hauppauge device.
The USB device does hardware mpeg-2 encoding, so you don't have to have a powerful computer to use it, nor do you need to encode the captures.
They're ready to author and burn.

Well there are 2 Ways you can do this...

The easiest way would be to Buy a Standalone DVD Recorder and Record from your VCR to the DVD Recorder on to Blank DVD"s.....

The other way would be to use a Capture Device/Card that you would Install in your PC (Preferably a Fast PC) and then Hook the VCR up to the Card installed in your PC and Capture the Video to your Hard Drive....
Then you would use a DVD Authoring Program so you can add your Chapters and Menu"s and to Burn the DVD....

So the First thing you would need (Becides a Fast PC) is a Video Capture device/Card which can run you From say $50 up to Many thousands of Dollars but you can Get a Very Good one From between $150 and $250 that would Be Fairly easy to use and Produce pretty Good Quality...
You could of cource get one For much cheaper But with a super Cheap Capture Card you would experience Problems with the Quality being Low and Audio and Video sync Problems and other Problems so it is Better to spend the extra Money and do it right....

There are a Few Different Types of Capture devices, there are Internal ones that Connect to your PC useing a PCI slot and there are External ones that connect to your PC Via USB or Firewire....

Generally the PCI Cards are Better than the USB Ones so stay away from USB capture devices Unless it uses Hardware Compression....

The Whole Process of going from VHS to DVD useing your PC and a Capture device and Of cource a DVD Burner can be a Very Complicated one especially if you have no experience in this area and there are so Many different Variables that it makes it very Difficult to Write out Plain Instructions on How to Do this because how you would go about Going from VHS to DVD would all depend on the Capture device you had and What format you were Captureing to and what software you were useing and a Bunch of other things that it is very hard to explain everything to you in a Step By step Manner......

Here i will leave you a Couple of Links to a couple good Capture devices that use Hardware Mpeg-2 Compression and Produce Good Quality and the Captured Files Can easilly be authored to DVD useing any DVD authoring Program But I suggest something like "MediaChance DVDLab" or "Tmpgenc DVD Author" and the Capture device should come with it"s own Capture software....

Both of these Capture devices are Internal PCI cards and are easy to install and Both use Hardware Mpeg-2 Compression so the Captured files Can be authored directly to DVD (Mpeg-2 is the Format used on DVD"s)....

Once you have yourself a Capture device Post back with what device you got and then we can tell you were to go from there so you can get your Captured Movies on to DVD....
