I am trying to digitize old VHS tapes of my kids. I have successfully captured video to uncompressed AVI at about 1G per minute.

I have attempted to compress the AVI video using Gordianknot and Divx Pro. I have achieved good results at about 18M per minute, but I have seen good video that is half that size.

Am I missing something or am I doing the best I can with captured video fron VHS tape?

Lower the bitrate. I usually do:

1) movie --> VCD mpeg 352x240/288
2) VCD mpeg --> AVI using DivX 'portable profile', max bitrate (768 kbps, DVD movies need 4000, instead) and 'encoding performance = slow' (slow but small size).

Doing this I usually encode a 2h movie in about 700 MB, and it's not bad.

I think that it's better to get a no-loss compression than making a 720x480/576 movie with low bitrate. After all, I couldn 't distinguish, on a normal TV, a DVD-rip converted in VCD form from a real DVD. But's it's only my point of view...

Paloch has an AVI.
He wants to recompress it into a smaller (DivX) AVI.
Are you, Aldaco, suggesting he first recode the AVI to VCD, then recode the VCD MPG into DivX AVI?
This is very poor advice.
I have mentioned before, that this is very poor advice, however you still unfortunately offer it.

Well we can all agree on that... do you think your advice offers it?
I believe the fellow should simply recode the AVI into whatever resolution and bitrate DivX AVI he desires, quickly and easily, in one go.
Just do it.
If he wants to make a 352x240 DivX, just make it!
You seem to associate an MPEG1 VCD with 'not making a 720x480 movie'.
The logic escapes me. I believe that, as a Moderator you have a responsibility to offer good advice.
As a Moderator, n00bies will expect your advice to be sound and well thought out - I believe that this is not the case ;^(

Yes, I have done hundreds & hundreds of them - and none of them have ever (even briefly) been MPEG1 VCDs.
The loss of quality in this proposed dual-recode method is unnecessarily huge.
Just encode directly to DivX using whichever resolution and DivX profile you require/desire!
But's it's only my point of view...
