Softmodded XBOX isn't working! Help!

Hi I softmodded a friends box. It was working fine when I modded it. Then I guess his brother was trying to play some of the roms that I installed on the HDD and now it boots up and says "updating xbox live", "failed to connect to xbox live. try later". I don't know what the hell they did but I can't load games, can't get to the dash, no DVD movies, nothing! I tried formatting a different HD and putting it in with no luck! Could someone please tell me whats wrong or what would cause this? I've searched many forums and googled this but can't find anything! I have an xbox with an X3 chip in it. Is there something that I can do with my box to fix it?
