I am new to burning and have gone through a lot of discs, successfully on .
I have a Toshiba notebook, xp, 512 RAM, intel pentium 4, 1.9 ghz.

My Burner is an external BenQ 162I, dual layer 16X and I am very pleased with it. Have had it for a couple of months.
BenQ recommends either Maxell, Sony, TDK or Imation media for use.

I have been using Maxell and their own brand of BenQ R+ with their book management program exe. command so that I burn in ROM and then I also use Dvd Shrink and Nero OR 1 Click Dvd Copy and am presently doing a trial withe Slysofts Clone Dvd as I use their other product "Any Dvd" and like the product. I have been finding Shrink is taking too long.

But that is not my question, In Canada here there are now Maxell R+ available at a very good price and I wanted to know if they are good??
The Manufacturer is Ricoh Co Ltd and the Manufacturer is ID is Ricoh and the speed is 1X,2X,4X and the Blank disc is 4.38 gb

I would appreciate comments as I want to go out and purchase more before they are all sold out, that is if they are good media.

Thankyou

In My Own Opinion...I always stick with the 2 Mfgrs. with whom I have never had a problem-Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim Datalife Plus. I have had a coaster with Maxell and that's all it takes for me. I'm an intolerant person with bad media. And I wouldn't worry too much about them selling out. Prices are coming down regularly and they won't sell out. They will make some more.

Thankyou for the reply, I have mentioned the brands that you have posted and BenQ indicated in their telephone support that they don't recommend that media as they have not tested it and so I go along with R+ either Maxell, Sony, TDK or Imation as recommended by BenQ.

As an example they do not recommend Fuji, Memorex or Kodak.

When I used the Dvd Identifier program on these dvd's that I am inquring about, I noticed a difference, the Manufacturer was Ricoh and the manufacturer ID was Ricoh Jpn.

My other Maxell's that I checked with the DVD Identifier showed those dvd discs as Manufacturer ID Hitachi Maxell and the Manufacturer as "Maxell" and that is why I did my post.

I have never had a coaster out of 60 back-ups that I have done with the older Maxell 4.75's that were Hitachi Maxell and that is why I am now curious about the quality of Ricoh??
Anyone have any ideas??

Thankyou

If you want to know what media to buy here is a good site to check out:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

this will tell you that Verbatum and Taiyo Yuden disks are top notch! Just because the manufacture recommends just a couple of disks doens't mean that other top brands won't work with yours. Or maybe it's your firmware that needs updating!

... If you look at the DigitalFAQ link, you will see that the Japanese Maxell discs (Maxell/Hitachi) are even higher rated than the TY discs ... the RICOHJPN discs are probably the best Taiwanese made discs, but they're 2nd class nonetheless ... Stick with the Japanese made discs and no matter what the manufacturer, you'll be OK ...

At Staples, I only buy media in person. Used the Identifier Program and found the Manufacturer Ricoh Japan.

My other Maxells were Hitachi Japan ..per the Mfr ID and the manufacturer Maxell. That is why I was inquiring as there is some change here and I wondered if Maxell would still be as good as they are now manufactured by Ricoh.
I just found them this weekend and so I have not been able to contact BenQ phone support and so I post here re: Ricoh Japan's reputation.

I have found these in 20's and in Jewel Cases which I need and sell for $9.

I don't buy in spindles and so look for the best price in jewel cases as I travel with my notebook.

Comments anyone??

Thankyou

... First of all the code is RICOHJPN, not RICOH JAPAN ... The discs are produced in Taiwan to Japanese standards - Pretty decent media, I've had great success with them ... The Maxell/Hitachi ARE Japanese manufactured and are top of the list grade 1 media, I have not had a single coaster in 100s of burns with this stuff .. These discs are only surpassed by the no longer produced Pioneer discs ... My only experience with Maxell discs has been with the +R type, but I've noticed that the 4X are RICOHJPN while the 8X are Maxell/Hitachi ...

Thx for the very valuable information, Future Shop simply told me that Maxell is going into a different type of packaging. I then tried the Identifier tool and you are correct, it reads Mfr ID Ricoh Jpn and the Mfr. as Ricoh which is a lot different from the origianl Maxell that I have been using where the Mfr ID is Hitachi Maxell and the Mfr is Maxell.

I did go out and purchase 7 (20 packs) with the dvd's in a jewel case included in the package.

It sounds like they are reasonable media and since BenQ supports Maxell use on their burners I thought that I should try and take advantage, as I don't like spindles without the jewel cases.

The Maxell spindle of 50 is $90 and these would be manufactured by Maxell and Mfr ID Hitachi Maxell.
Whereas I purchase 7 (20 packs) in jewel cases for $70 for 140 discs in jewel cases.

My brother bought 10 (20 packs) and we have burned and played 4 back-ups and they seem to be good.

Anymore comments?

Am thinking about getting 3 more packs which should be a good long supply.
The Blank disc is 4.38 gig per the identifier and Record speeds of 1X, 2X, 4X The bin at Future Shop with these in it has only about 12 pkges left and about 40 R- available.

Any other comments??

I appreciate everything members have to say being a Noob.

Thankyou

sounds good to me! 50cents a disk is the going rate for a DVD media.....it should go down sometime next year when Blue-Ray comes out and HD-DVD, too. We shall see which one becomes standard. And we will all benifit because the DVD media should go down to like CD media pricing! Then it should be pick and choose!
