A while back I bought 4 25 packs of Fuji +R 8x for $10 each to do my main movie backups (about 50 burns so far, no problems) I then picked up 2 20 packs of the Teon +R 8x from Staples for $5 each to use as throwaways (5 burns, no problems).I also picked up a 100 pack of CompUSA -R 4x for $20 to use for xbox backups because I heard slower burns on -R media make the best backups (1 burn, no problem)

After reading on here about media codes, good or bad media, etc.,I decided to check out what I had so I copied the same movie to all 3 brands I had. I use a Plextor 716A. I used Plextools Professional to test and all were burned with DVD Decrypter and the +R's had the book type set to dvd-rom.

my results:

Fuji 8x +R: media code Yuden000-T002-00
results: good

Teon 8x +R: media code CMC MAG-E01-00
results: very good

CompUSA 4x -R: media code Princo
results: not good

I expected the CompUSA's to be junk but what gives with the other two? I thought the Teon CMC MAG's were supposed to be crap while the
Fuji Yudens were good. I dont know what I should do now. Ditch my Fuji,s and buy more Teons?

Best Buy has the 50 pack of Verbatims 8x + or - on sale for $20 this week so maybe I'll toss everything and restock with those

Thanks

... you can toss the TY-produced Fuji discs my direction ... they're first rate ... As far as your very good burn with the CMC Mag produced crap - Even a blind squirrel will find an acorn every now and then ...

Give those Teons/CMC some time - chances are they will degrade. I am in the process of redoing all my discs that are on CMC's and Princo's. I try the backup copy first just to see how bad they are - alot of them have quite a few read errors.
I'm with catfreak - toss the TY fuji's here. TY is all I have been using for the past 8 months or so.

you could send those fuji TYs here too, i have become an orphanage for TY media lately~ whether they are stray, widowed, or otherwise, as long as they are GENUINE TY, i'll be MORE than happy to take them off your hands.

yes, as regards to those teons...you got lucky, but, i too, as binkie mentioned, think they will degrade over time and you will be left with more headaches in trying to "rebackup" what was previously on those onto better media...stick w/ the Fuji's...or try the verbatims~ :)

I guess that I am F.......ed with my old Memorex disks then...... that's what I used for about a year till I knew better! Will those eventually degrade too? So far all those disks I backup on Mem are still going strong. How long does it take for degrading to set in?? if there is an answer to that question!

IHoe
As far as I know there is not a set time when they will degrade (if they are). You never know how long they were sitting around until you bought them. I had some discs go bad within a few months and others are still okay (same pack). Maybe you happened upon some Memorex that were manufactured by the better names. Any Memorex I've ever had was CMC.
If your's are CMC I would almost guarentee within a year you will start to have read errors even if you reduced your burn to 1x. (That's been my experience at least).

@ihoe

that really varies from user to user...i've had memorex degrade in a matter of 3 months, where they were NO LONGER RECOGNIZED on my pc OR stand alone players~ it was so bad even decrypter using brute force could not get the files off the disc properly~ :)

there is no real "time frame" that i go by, as with each user, there are many factors. i just don't spend any of my hard earned money on what i consider "crap media", but hey, that is JUST ME and my OWN opinion, others might disagree; but for me, i won't take that risk knowing what i know now about media~ :)

nice setup by the way, i custom built mine, but i have everything you got on there, minus the ati vid. card, i prefer nvidia (personal preference as i have a 6800 card) :) and 2 of those 24" widescreens on my setup~ :P

i have an older chipset than yours, so the pci-e cards and ddr2 are not applicable on mine~ hope that answers your question, somewhat...it's the "grey area" where there is NO REAL ANSWER, just opinions based on other users experiences. i would avoid memorex at ALL costs, if i were you~ good luck

I watched some of my first burns recently and they are just fine, as they are now about 3 yrs old! But hey..... live and lurn! I still have the originals if I need to re-backup! Thanks for the info! As usual.... aD is the place to get your answers!

@Kivory.....I just love my computer and all it has.... burns real good!!!!!! I'm enjoying all that it brings to the table!

I actually got a great deal from Dell..... at first I ordered it..... it was very expensive! but after tax season they dropped down the price by 33.3%! I cancelled the order and reordered it to get the sale price and since it was on sale I bought extr programming and other things to make this computer the best I ever had! Thanks Kivory.... we all learn from everyone who shares here! Long live aD!

nothing to add except Memorex et al should be banned from selling media. Utter rubbish media keeps me busy posting on here for hours each night.
Buy top notch media such as Verbatim and/or TY and system setup permitting you will be good to go.
Please banish Memorex from your house and your burner! (see 2nd link in my sig for tribute to crap media if you like and maybe the first link also)

OK. My Teon/CMC and the CompUSA/Princo will only be used for testing, etc. I will stick with the Fuji MIJ (TY's) or the Verbatims (mcc) both on sale at Best Buy. I still have a few questions. I understand the longevity of the good discs will be longer than the crappy ones but how is it possible than the few Teons I tested all had results of VERY GOOD while all the Fujis I tested had results of GOOD

Also, I have a question about the Verbatims. I posted on x-box scene about whether I should use -R or +R booktyped to -ROM for xbox backups. I decided to use the +R booktyped but I came upon this thread during my search. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=336348&hl=

Here is the relevant paragraph about the Verbs if someone could explain. Are the Verb MIT really CMC and should I only look for ones from Singapore
Quote:
Mitsubishi Chemicals (MCC)-This one also ranks very high for compatibility and media durability (just a hair lower than Taiyo Yuden and Ricoh). Like Ricoh however, you aren't very likely to find Mitsubishi Chemicals labeled discs. Where you usually find MCC is on the store label Verbatim. Verbatim discs produced in Singapour and Taiwan use the MCC dye (The Verbatims made in Japan are Taiyo Yuden ). However, it should be noted that even though the Taiwanese made discs carry the MCC dye, they are actually produced by CMC Magnetics which means they are subject to lower quality standards. If you go the MCC route then try to get the Singapour produced Verbatims as they are "true MCC" produced discs and even though they use the same dye are subject to a more rigid quality control standard.
Once again, I am not saying the Taiwanese (CMC) produced MCC dye Verbatims aren't bad, but your money will be better spent on the Singapour produced ones.
This stands true for DVD-R/DVD+R (unless the DVD+R happen to be produced by Ricoh)
Thanks

Now do me a favor and go buy another 100 packs of TEON for youself ok. Hahahas....

Still can't figure why the Teons had better test results but anyway I'm done with them. I went to BB to pick up some of the Verb's on sale and looked at the Fuji's also. Some of the Fuji +R's were made in Taiwan and some were made in Japan. At least now I know what to look for. I am compulsively looking at the "made in" label of every spindle, cakebox, package, whatever of every brand, +R or -R, 2x, 4x, etc.,15 pack, 25 pack, 50 pack, etc. I cant stop. Thanks guys :)
(btw, whats the difference between a cakebox and a spindle?)

Anyway, I have all three big stores (BB, CompUSA, Circuit City) within 2 miles of my house so decided to look around. Nothing special at CompUSA, but I think CC is trying to give away the Verbs. 25 pack 16x +R's$9.99, 100 packs CD-R's $12.99, 50 pack CD-R's$4.99, 10 pack of the 4x +R movie reels with cases $4.99. etc., etc.
Heres the link http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/catOid/-13012/N/20012961+20013011...
I looked at some of the sale tags and they said "ends 7/28/05" so you guys have time if you want them. Not sure what the store stock situation will be but mine had everything but the CD-R's. The truck comes about 5:00 pm tomorrow so back I go to check.

To sum it all up: even though I burn at 8x I will return the 8x Verbs to BB and get the 16x Verbs at CC for the same price. Still not sure if I should get the Fuji MIJ's also. To much info on one day. I think my head is gonna explode.

Thanks again
