Apolgies if this one has been already answered...
Can anyone explain the difference between a store bought DVD Video (i.e. Star Wars) and a movie burned to a home DVD-R?

I burned a home movie to a DVD-R but it won't play on my DVD player. I now realize that my DVD player is a little out of date and would need to most likely get a newer one to play it. But why will a DVD-Video (from the store) play on ALL DVD players???

Thanks!!

Shop bought DVD's are "pressed", while the discs you and I use are burnt. To achieve this, a dye is used. That expalins why they are often a different colour on the "burn" side.

It might pay you to do some checking on your DVD player, as not all are compatible (but most modern ones are)
