I have done my share of research on the dreaded 'fluxuating buffer level' that affects many burners. I have tried everything, INCLUDING replacing my burner and changing my discs to no avail whatsoever. My DMA is on and my firmware is updated. I feel as though nothing can help me. The one thing that is sub-par is that I'm not using usb 2.0, but as I burned coninuously and fast before, I fail to see how it's a problem. If you have any advice on solving this, Please, I beg you, post. I'm desperate.

By the way, my story's just like everyone else's (didn't change a thing on my computer, one day Ka-Boom! and its fried) and my specs are:

Windows XP Home, sp1
LG GSA-5163D burner (was Benq 162I before I exchanged)
Maxell 16x dvd-r
and all the necessary memory and such.

Software, hardware upgrades, tips, anything will be very much appreciated.
Thanks.

I think this is your problem. USB1.1 is really sllloooooowwww. If you have firewire available I'd recommend using that, otherwise go out and get a USB2.0 card for your PCI slot.

did u start burning faster? Because if you try to burn faster but don't increase your data transfer rate, you will run into more problems.

I don't believe it. I just went out to pick up the $20 iogear usb 2.0 adapter, and guess what, its gone! The buffer level is back to normal! I can't thank this forum's knowlegable community enough, especially squizzle for informing me about the $20 usb. Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy.

Thanks again,
Kevin.

I have a sempron 2800 avertec laptop and my buffer level goes nuts ohhh... I was using taiyo yuden 4x rated disks burning at 4x...they would go down to like a 35% buffer level and die at 5% of burn...as soon as went down to 2x..bam...everything was ok ...weird..

nohelpme, you may also have USB1.1 on the laptop, although I doubt it. If you have firewire I'd give that a shot. Does the buffer just do that when burning DVD files on your hard drive, or are you copying a disc on the fly?
