This is VERY EASY to do. Any newer HD will work fine in the Xbox. Do you want another stock 8GB HD in your Xbox or an upgraded one? You can go up to 400GB, but most go w/ between 80-200GB. All you will have to do is take out the old one, install the new one, and format it.
What chip do you have and what dashboard are you running?

The dashboard is what comes up when you turn on your Xbox w/ your modchip enabled. It should look different compared to your original dash. You may not even have a hacked dash on your Xbox however...
You really need to figure out what chip you have in your system. All you have to do to check is take out the hard drive and dvd-rom and look right on top of the motherboard.

Is there any error number in the corner of the screen when you boot up your Xbox? Is there any way that you can disable your chip? Try holding down the power button for 2 seconds when starting up your Xbox, or turning it on w/ the eject button. See if your Xbox boots to the original dash then.
It would really help if I knew what chip you were using.

Ok, if you want to get your Xbox working again, you will need to change your HD. Error 7 means that your HD is timing out.
So here is what you need to do:
Buy a new HD. Make sure it is under 400GB and that it is an ATA/133. Maxtor, Western Digital, SeaGate and Hitachi are all decent brand names.
Now, you will need something called Slayers. Go onto #xbins and DL the torrent for Slayers. Once you have that, burn the ISO to a QUALITY DVD-R or CD-RW. If you do not know how to use #xbins, go here, http://webpages.charter.net/modchipzone/xbinshowto.htm Or ou can access #xbins an easier way using this, http://www.teamxecuter.com/downloads/xbins.rar
After you have slayers burned to a disc and have your new HD installed over the old one, pop in the slayers disc into your Xbox drive. Now, Slayers will give you a bunch of options, choose the one you need for your new HD.
Slayers will do the rest! Your Xbox will be up and running and you will have the EvoX dashboard installed.
