I've been doing some DVD rips to XviD and have noticed a seemingly weird occurance. Generally, I do two-pass encodes using Magic DVD Ripper. However, occasionally I'll find a disc that my ripping machine chokes on. When this happens, I take it to a different machine, and if it reads OK there, copy out the VOB file for whatever it is I'm ripping. I move the VOB over to my ripping machine and encode it to XviD using VirtualDubMod.

But the weird thing is, encoding from the VOB file with VDMod takes about 1.5x the total encoding time that Magic DVD Ripper takes to encode it from the DVD source. Is this normal? I'm no expert, so maybe there are some settings with VDMod that I should alter? In terms of what's actually happening with the data, I can't think of any reason it should take so much longer this way, but every time I've had to use the VOD/VDMod route, this is the outcome.
