i was trying to convert a tv series into a dvd. the series has 24 episodes, and each episode is compressed using xvid. however when i was using the guide http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/virtualdub_join_avi.cfm
to join two avis it said at step 5 "Locate the second AVI file, select it and click Open, the second file should now be added to the end of the first file. Now this is where you will get problems if you have file with separate framerates, resolutions or codecs." virtualdub tells me the video streams have different sampling rates and i can't continue with the joining. Anyone know how to get around this or any other apps i can use??
plus (this is a secondary problem and doesnt stop me from joining avi but any help would still be appreciated)when i first open the avi file VD says it detects "improper VBR encoding in source" and it will "rewrite the audio header in CBR", "for better compatibility" apparently. that i dont have a problem with. this may produce a skew from the video stream (7484ms worth, is that a large amount?), no idea what that means and whether i should decompress entire audio stream to wav and recompress.
p.s im a noob but i am one that can follow clear instructions.

if you can't join them you could always put em on a dvd as separate titles (dvd shrink re-author mode is one way) and a menu is optional.

Is it compulsory to have all files merged onto one huge one? Or you can deal with the 24 sepparate files?

If merging is not a must (remember about quality loss if u do so) then you can add files to one dvd and create a simple menu to select between them. If you're not that versatile onto dvd creation, TMPG DVD author is a good alternative for you.

it doesnt have to be merged. i thought of seperate files on 1 dvd but how do i do that? can i fit about 12 episodes each 45 minutes long onto 1 dvd? remember that all my files are in xvid avi. format so i presume i need to convert them before being able to author a dvd.

Ok...

1) you need to convert all those AVI's onto an MPEG-2 compatible format
2) then author them using a program
3) burn in a DVD

To convert from AVI to DVD you need an encoder program. A free one (at least for the first 30 days) is TMPG Encoder. Once you've encoded all those xvids onto MPG-2 you can then import them onto a DVD authoring program.
Keep in mind that encoding is a time consuming process depending on the lenght of the file and the specifications os your computer (it can take hours and hours in some cases)

There are several guides in the "Guides section" in afterdawn which show step by step how to do so should you like to investigate a bit more.

You can decrease bitrate, which will lead to a lower quality video.

A better option, IMHO, is to use DVDShrink to fit the finished files onto a 4.7 Gb disc.

Depending on the compression factor you'll end up having more or less time. One of my discs consists of 4 different movies (total time of +/- 4 hours, with an acceptable quality)
