I had an avi file that i wanted to put on CDR.
so i converted it to svcd format (mpeg-2). using WINAVI video converter.

then burned it to CDR (svcd) with nero.

MY PROBLEM IS : when i watch it on my tv the subtitles are cut off half way and hard to see ! (its an anime/cartoon)

when watched on my PC the Mpeg file looks great and the subtitles are clear and not cut off.

Is it because of my tv ? what can i do to fix this problem ?
(it seems like my dvd player/tv wants to stretch the movie too much ?then the subtitles dont fit into the screen ??)
i only have the mpeg file now...the avi was deleted. :( (should i have convert to vcd instead of svcd ? or does that not matter?)

could i reconvert it to an avi and some how "edit" the aspect ratio/size or something like that ? (or do i need to start over with the orginal avi file ?)

i searched the forums....but still not sure of what to do...

any help? thanks

I've been having trouble with the exact same thing for a good while now, myself. I just tonight finally found a solution and, since I ran across your post while looking for said solution, I figured I'd share the wealth =)

First step, you'll have to get the TMPGEnc program. I'm sure it's very possible to do it with other encoders, but I only have instructions for the one at the moment. Ignore their helpful wizard thing and get to the main window.

At the bottom, select your video source, and the other fields should fill themselves in. You want an mpg output file.

After this, hit the Settings button to the right, and put the Size to 720 x 480 pixels. Change the Aspect Ratio to 4 x 3 (NTSC).

On the Advanced Tab, leave the Source Aspect Ratio at 1:1 (VGA), but change the Video Arrange Method to: Center (Keep Aspect Ratio).

After this, just hit okay and have it start encoding. Once that's all finished, burn as normal with Nero. Voila! Anime that works on the TV without all that nasty lost screen/text.

That's the best I can do for the moment. I'm still going to keep looking for a faster method, but at least this one works. I hope this helped ^^
Sorry for the disasterously long response delay.
