I'm using a Phillips DVD+-RW, model no. DVD8631 internal drive on a Dell 8240 running Windows XP Pro. When I load a DVD -R disc that was burned on a separate VCR/DVD recorder, only the title frame shows and there is no playback (with either PowerDVD or Windows Media Player). I upgraded to the latest firmware (GD30) on the Phillips.
The disc plays back just fine on the unit that burned it AND also on a Dell Latitude X300 laptop that I own, also running Windows XP Pro.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what to try next? Commercial DVDs run just fine on the Phillips so I'm not sure whether the problem is harware or software, but I suspect the latter.
Thanks.

what kind of blank discs are you using? I'd recommend going with Verbatum or Taiyo Yuden if purchasing online. Some media works in some players but not others. Very common issue.

I've tried both TDK DVD-R discs as well as LG DVD-RW discs and the results are the same with both. I'll give the Verbatim a shot but, based on these results, I don't think it's the media.
Thanks for the reply.

what program(s) did you use for your burning process?

can you rip the problem disc with DVD Decrypter? Try that and watch it off your hard drive. That may help and if it does, maybe just reburn it. Standalone DVD recorders are goofy sometimes like that.

Yes, I was able to rip the problem disc with DVD Decrypter. Thanks for the suggestion. Since this is a rather awkward procedure, does the fact that I was able to rip the disc with DVD Decrypter suggest anything I can do to remedy the problem on the Phillips drive?

If you want to continuously watch movies using your internal dvd drive that are recorded off your standalone recorder, you may have to rip them onto your hard drive, then reburn if you want. Different discs may help out though. I'd go with Verbatum or if you purchase online try Taiyo Yuden.

Thanks for the tips. Verbatim discs appear to work fine in the sense that I can use the Go.Video combo to copy from VHS to DVD and Windows Media Player plays them OK.
Can you suggest a better (hopefully free) media player than WMP? As usual with Microsoft products it's more than a little clunky. I have PowerDVD on my system but it still won't play the Verbatim discs.

I personally don't like one of them any more than the other, but there's PowerDVD, WinDVD, Real Player, and probably a few more. I think most ppl use PowerDVD.
