I made a movie and I edited it with Sony Vegas 6.0. Now I read that the normal format for DVDs is MPEG-2. I made the movie in MPEG-2 format and when I made my DVD disc, the movie was very blurry. It looks as if the clips have to be perfectly still otherwise it looks really bad.
So I am looking for the best quality. Is it AVI or Quicktime, or any other format?
The other thing I was wondering is about the size of the movie when it is rendered. Would it be generally safe to say that the higher the size of the file, the higher quality it? When I made it a MPEG-2 movie, the 45 minute clip was 1.25GB and when I made it an AVI, it was 17.9 GB.
MPEG-2 is the format required to create a DVD because of its high quality. That is you need to encode all other formats (AVI, WSF, MOV, etc etc) to MPEG-2 to make them DVD compatible.
Blurring of the image could be originated in poor quality at while encoding, the encoder you choose has something to do in that. In general, the rule of thumb is "more encoding time, better quality"
One of the best "free" (at least for 30 days) encoders is TMPGEnc. If you plan to go into something more professional Canopus Procoder is your way, while something intermediate would be Mainconcept encoder.
