what is mp2 dvd?

I have backed up LOTS of dvd via dvdshrink. I had trouble with some Frasier disks - ran into read errors after 3-4 GB & ended up with only partial rips. 'shrink doesn't see the resulting vobs so I fell back to dvd2avi whichdid see them and then used tmpegenc to create dvd but tmpeg produced mpg files instead of vobs. What can i do with these mpg files? dvdrhelp has no guide for converting mpg to vob. I don'dt want SVCD CDs, but wold be willing to settle for svcd format on dvd, which gives me 7X the space, but I haven't seen how to do that either.

Could I crank up nero to burn mpg files to dvd? what device would play it? Are these newbie questions?
