I've tried Sony -R and +R, Philips -R, Memorex -R, Maxell +R, all 8X and can't get any of them to burn faster then 2X on my Pioneer 108 dual layer burner. I've done the latest firmware update from Pioneer and still nothing. I was told by someone you have to get an update from disc manufacturer as well for the media you are using for it to burn faster. Anyone know if this is true or what the fix is?

sounds MORE like a PIO/DMA issue than a firmware issue. from what i know about drives and media, i think you were mislead about the info regarding "needing an update from the disc manufacturer", the FIRMWARE is what tells/teaches your drive to recognize various media~

the reason for speed i feel is PIO/DMA related, perhaps you've had enough errors on backups that your system reverted BACK to PIO mode, whereas it SHOULD be on DMA for faster write speeds.

here is a good guide for DMA settings:

Hello, Great advice kivory. I have a nephew that had the same problems when he reinstalled windows, for about a year he could only burn at 2x or 1x and sometimes have to throw away a disk because of errors. I was reading on this great site one night and someone had a similiar problem as this and followed the same advice kivory just gave, heck it might have been kivory , anyhow to make a long story short we followed those exact steps and bam!! 8x flawless burns for the last six months. just another testamonial of how great this site and everyone on it is !/Unjust
