I've been having issues burning fansubbed anime onto DVD in order to watch them on my TV and wonder if there's a better solution than the one/s I came up with.

My first attempt was to buy a Divx DVD player--worked great, but the subtitles sat too low on the bottom of the screen to be readable, and sometimes ran off the sides. I discovered this was because most fansubbed anime is 640x480. Yet it played perfectly when I used the video output on my laptop (output setting 640x480, natch). So.

Second attempt was to play the files directly from my laptop to my (next purchase) DVD recorder. This worked perfectly, except in order to record these files, I had to watch them again. Not that big of a problem, but I have series with over 100 episodes, so this process takes a long time. Plus, I was limited to the very basic menu function provided by the recorder.

Third attempt was take the (DiVX or Xvid) files and resize them in Virtual Dub (660x420 with a frame expansion setting of 720x480), then to make my menu and burn them with Nero Vision Express. Again, no actual problems with this, except for the 24 some hours worth of combined encoding time for 4-5 22 minute files.

Just FYI, I tried DivxtoDVD with a forced aspect ratio (as was suggested elsewhere in this forum) with no change in the too low placement of the subtitles. I also tried IM Too MPEG encoder for resizing, but the video quality was less than acceptable (fuzzy, especially regarding the subtitles). My system is a P3 1.0 ghz, 512 ram -the max it can handle- running Windows 98SE.

So, my question is: Is there a better/faster software solution to get the results I want? If not, obviously replacing my elderly PC would give me faster encoding times, but would it be enough of a change to make it worth shelling out the money?
