I recently purchased a new laptop with a DVD burner. I'm wondering if there is a way to copy a DVD I have to my laptop, and if so how to. I'm looking to burn the DVD onto the laptop so I can view it on the laptop without having the DVD inside the drive, not to burn a backup on a blank DVD. So, can that be done, and if so how?
if the dvd is copyright protected you will need a ripping tool.
I suggest DVD Decrypter there are many but as far as rippers go DVD Decrypter is the cream of the crop and free.
First, you should create a folder for your DVD backup before hand. This is the place on your Hard Drive where DVD Decrypter can put your files and can later pick them up to play them. Try to put it someplace where you won't forget it - i.e. C:/All DVD work/Pirates of the Caribbean. Next, inside that folder, create another folder and call this one VIDEO_TS (you need to write it out exactly like that as it is case sensitive). All of the files that you rip from the original DVD you'll want to place here. Your PowerDVD player or your WinDVD player will need this folder to recognize the files as a movie and set itself up to play from that.

Open DVD Decrypter and go to "Mode", then "File and place a check there.
Where it says "Source", put your DVD drive -
Where it says "Destination", Browse until you find your folder -
Click the "Disc to HD" icon.
Now let's wait until out rip in finished ?
When you wish to pay your movie, go to the movie file, then the VIDEO_TS folder inside that folder and your movie will play.
