Difficulty to chip a PS2 v1 compared to xbox v1-1.6?

My bro "loaned" me his ps2 since he kept getting DREs. I cleaned and adjusted the laser and all is good now. I'd like to mod it, and have chipped a few xboxs in my day. Wire Pin install on that is a no-brainer, can do the d0 w/o too much difficulty as well. I was wondering what the difficulty lvl for modding a v1 ps2 is compared to the xbox? Also, I'd appreciate any chip suggestions and "must-have chip features". I don't have a hd for the ps2, or lan, or plan on ever going on the net w/it really, but I'd like a no-nonsense good quality chip for around $50.00. I haven't yet checked whether or not this v1 will play video from DVD-Rs though. Are there any dvd-rom identification tutorials that I could cross-reference to see if this will play dvd+,-r?
