Will Sonic DLA interfere with external DVD writer

I se to burn dvds fine with my laptop and external usb dvd burner. my laptop came installed with sonic and sonic dla. i think it may now be causing me a problem. I cannot complete a succesful burn with any program now. the burn just hangs at a random point each time. i have to turn the burner off to get the program to quit. i have tried nero, deepburn, shrink, etc. i am using a nec 3520a in an external case. the only recent change is i have added an external usb hardrive lately, but keep it disconnected when i am burning. i have also reinstalled the dvd writer drivers and nero, using the nero clean tool. i am at a loss and very frustrated, any help would be greatly appreciated.
