I am a newbie and really am struggling at this converting from avi to dvd format. I have followed all the instructions to the tee on this website and cant seem to get it right. would really appreciate it if someone could walk me through it like i was a 5 yr old. My problem is that i can get as far as converting avi to dvd but when i try playing disc on my dvd player it doesnt work. My player is brand new and does support dvd-r dvd+r disc's etc. Any help any one can give me would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Try burn to harddisk first. If the result is good, then you probably have a media problem.

As I said, you probably have a media problem. But you can always browse the resultant DVD to see if all the contents from the harddisk had actually been copied over to make sure.
If yes, try change your media.
BTW, which programs were you using for conversion and for burning?

I've tried several but am going to stick to Nero ultra. Seems to be the easiest to understand. I tried converting a AVI file to DVD-R disc and program indicated i needed to insert dvd+rrw. Ive been trying to use DVD-R disc. The programs seem to burn videos on disc but when i try playing it on my dvd player it indicates no data or image found. I am going to go purchase DVD+RW disc's and give it a go. Please tell me if i'm going about this wrong. Really want to find solution and enjoy my dvd burner as i had planned.

If your burner can handle -R and Nero keeps asking for +RWs, then you may indeed have a media problem. But you can check by using Nero Info Tools to see what kind of media the burner can work with, and to see whether Nero can recognize your -Rs.

just checked info tools and all are checked as suppose to be. I'm thinking maybe my dvd player is the issue on what type of disc's it will play.

So did it say it's compatible with -R? Also, did you check 'disc info.' to see if the burner + burning program could actually recognize the disc?

Easiest? I'll say DVDSanta, just paste the avis and burn. Some people like the program very much, some don't.
What I'll usually do is to convert the avis into dvd compliant format with VSO DivXtoDVD (free program), then burn with Nero.

Nice to know!
Re. erasing discs, some programs (e.g. Nero) would offer to do so before writing onto a non-empty disc. Some won't.
There are also the short (non-complete) and long (complete) way to do it.
Normally, programs like Nero or DVD Decrypter would handle the job quite well. So why don't you give them a try and post again if you encounter any problems?
