Ok, so I have built a few computers and thought I was pretty handy with them, but now I am stumped. I know it must be something simple, but the problem is obviously beyond my computer knowledge. Judging from the posts, you people are pretty well versed, so I am going to pick your brain a bit.
***My Pioneer DVR-104 will read data CDs and play audio CDs, but will not recognize DVDs.***
The last couple versions of DVDXCopy were working quite well for me. I had a bunch of extra "junk" on my hard drive, so I decided to reformat the hard drive and reinstall XP. Everything went great. Got all the XP updates, including SP1. Also updated VIA chipset drivers and the reinstalled the latest firmware for the Pioneer DVR-104, version 1.40. Then I installed DVDXCopy version 1.4 and when I launch it I get the error message "INSERT MOVIE IN DVD DRIVE". Hmmm, there is a DVD movie in the drive. I tried several DVDs in the drive, still the same error message.
Then I successfully installed Nero (using the DVD drive I'm getting the error with) and the latest Nero update to see if it recognized the DVD drive. Nero lists the DVR-104 as a eligible drive, but when I try to burn to it or choose Medium-Info, Nero says "No medium inserted or drive not ready".
Windows XP Pro recognizes the drive. It reads CDs in the drive, but will not give any info on DVDs. I don't get it. Why will the DVD drive play and install CDs, but not DVDs? PowerDVD also "sees" the drive, but will not play a DVD.
I have disconnected my CD burner. IDE1 has only the hard drive connected to it (as master) and IDE2 has only the DVD burner (as master) connected to it. Everything is the same as it was before reformatting the hard drive. I even switched out the IDE2 cable. What gives?
Like I said, I thought I knew a lot about computers. I think it is something overlooked, but I can't figure it out. I am feeling very humbled and would like to hear ANY suggestions. Is DMA an issue with XP?
Help! Throw something out there. Any ideas at all? Take the time to throw out a few keystrokes and I will be much obliged.
Thanks,
Hvalman
