Hey all

I rented a DVD and used latest version of DVD shrink to analyse and then backup the DVD files to my hard disk, including a deep scan for better quality. I also had nero make a copy right away, through shrink.

as my friend wanted a copy as well, i used shrink again and opened the folder with all those files in it, and burnt another copy.

Now, the error i have is not solid. by that i mean it does not happen every time on every disc, (i burnt the entire series) and out of the 10 discs, 3 work perfectly. the rest had errors

the errors include
- freezing after pressing Play Movie at the menu screen, then eventually crashing to the DVD player main screen. it DOES work if i just press play, or select scene 1.

- working fine until i change the language to german(default was english) upon which it does the first error. now, this only happens when you change the language from the main menu. i can run it in english, and then press Change Language button on my remote and it will work, or i can (once its playing in english) press menu, change the language to german, and the resume film, and it works.

now, i still had the last dvd's files on my hdd, so i created a new dvd video session in nero, and copied the TS-Video folder, and burnt it. no problems

i then tried ripping a burnt copy with shrink, and then doing the same as above, new session with nero, etc etc. it works perfectly.

so, i have kind of described my problem and the solution, but i would like to know why this is so. what is actually going on?

thanks, Cliaz

did you remove anything? don't think it would happen if you just shrunk it straight up. If you took out a german warning title or menu the player could get confused.

possibly poor media quality or too high of a burn speed. Try to keep burn speeds 4x or less, also what kind of media are you using? Maybe try the problem discs in other players to see if they work better there.

I have had menu problems with Shrink when using a lot of compression. Say in the <55% range. It kinda scrambles the .ifos as near as I can tell. When you copy the copy you are rebuilding the .ifos at 100% (or no compression). Just a theory.

Sometimes those eposodic DVDs don't have much in the way of extras to remove so you end up compressing and burning everything. I don't know how much compression you used.

hmm......that does raise good points, due to 2 things

compression - i have no idea. i just clicked backup, and im basically a new user so dont know much about that. a mate told me that most rental discs are DVD9 format, dual layer 7 gigs or watever, mainly to stop 'backing up', so it probably was compressed. im really not sure though, i have no experience in the matter of compressing\burning. for all i know the encryption could have doubled the size?

burn speed - my dvd burner is 16 speed, yet the dvds i can get here are only 8 speed. but i recall when looking at it, DVD Shrink was burning it (via Nero of course) at 16x. could that be it?

also, i didnt remove any features at all, so thats not it.

that could be it. I believe Nero defaults at max burn speed. Maybe you could tell Shrink to leave the files on your hard drive or make an ISO image file instead of automatically burning with Nero. That way you could manually do the burn and drop the burn speed down. Most people here say 4x or less.

Do you have DVD Decrypter? If so, you could tell Shrink to make an ISO and burn with Decrypter. Before you do that go into Decrypter and click Mode/ISO Write and change the burn speed down (in the bottom right corner). Then it should remember that setting the next time it opens up (which will be when Shrink opens it up for you).

alright, ill give that a go

one thing i just noticed last night, when i actually watched one of the dvds, was that the last 2 chapters are completely digitized, artifacts and whatnot popping up everywhere, and eventually refused to play. joy.

means ill probably have to burn them all again. that then leads on to the question - do i have to rent them all again? i cant use rip the copies ive made can I, cause that would be like ripping a already wrecked version?

a lot of media isn't that great towards the end of the disc. In DVD Shrink, you can go into the preferences and change target backup size to a custom amount, most recommend 4300 MB (default is 4464MB). This prevents burning to the outer edge of the disc and should help you with this problem.

all errors and glitches were fixed after i reburnt at 4x
this even worked with a copy which was previously dodgy, but i then shrinked and reburnt as a seperate session in Nero, so it must have been the burning speed.

thanks for the quick replies and concise answers

cliaz, you figured it out for yourself! Good deal. Sometimes you just need some verification that your on the right track. Verification provided by squizzle and confirmed by you!

It is cool when it all works out and a problem is solved with just a little help from us.

Happy burning!(@4X)
Frank
