I apologize if this is the wrong place to post. I looked thru the various categories but am now completly lost (I'm 71). A couple of years ago i made a CDRW of a movie with my grandson in it (school project) using analogue camcorder and captured with ATIAIW. It apparently is an AVI file and plays in windows media player on my newest puter. I want to add this clip to a DVD movie containing more recent clips (digital) of my grandson. How do i extract this file from the CDRW ? When i try to open it I get the message : " The instruction at "0x01b95710" referenced memory at "0x01b95710". The memory could not be "written". "
When i try to play the CDRW in my older puter, it wont play in windows media player and when i try to open the file, i get the message " Indeo Video Playback program requires a current Indeo Codec".
Both puters use Windoes XP pro. Newest puter has 1 gig ram and ATIAIWexpress vid card. I would appreciate any suggestions and the forum this should be going into. Yrnehbad

I don't know if this will solve your problem, so you should wait to here from someone who knows a little more than me. But try to download Klite Codec package. This may solve your codec problem.

Indeo codec, it's telling you what you need to play this file. Download Indeo codec on old pc. obveslly new computer has it, it's playing it. Try this little tool its caled (video tool box) look for it at download.com
you can open any video file and it will tell ya what codec the file is in remember .AVI could be a number of file compressions like DivX, Indeo, ect,ect.

what program are you using to open the cd sounds as if you are triing to write to the disk and what-ever program you used to do the original burn might have sealed the disk so as not to let any one record over it. what programs do you currently have installed on each p.c.

Dear yrnehbad,
1) Try download and install K-Lite codec Pack (full version). It has Indeo codec and many more:

2) But your problem may not be just about codecs. It's also about transferring an AVI from a cd-rw to a dvd. For that matter, you need first check to make certain that you indeed have an AVI (check the extension of the movie clip file, e.g. xxx.AVI means AVI, xxx.mpg means mpeg). If yes, then try copy the AVI to harddisk first to make things easier. If you can do that, you're safe. Next tell us the format of the dvd movie (e.g. AVI? Vido_TS folder?). Then we'll suggest how to join them.
3) I'm a little bit concerned about the integrity of the original AVI. Rewriteables are good for their purposes, but they should not be used for long-term storage because they're less stable. You may want to take note of this in future.
For the mean time, let's see if you can copy the AVI to harddisk, and we'll take it from there.

I'm finally back from cottage (I'm also a very slow driver, LOL). Another problem, at 71 i easily forget where i left off (so i had to reread the posts in this thread) and also my mouth often goes faster than my brain (LOL, still have a little sense of humour left). For now lets forget the codecs. This requirement appears only on my older puter (which has had several changes and which may have removed the codec.
My new(super ???)puter will play the cd in Windows media player (so can i assume that it has the requied codec ?). But i cant open the cd to see what is on it. I get the message "when opening the instruction at OX01b95710 referenced memory at OX01b95710. The memory could not be "written"". I have one gig of memory (could some of it be bad ? I want to extract the AVI file (i'm still not home so i cant check to be certain thats its AVI) so i can include it on a DVD with other movie clips of my grandson. Hello...what I would do is download a program called "DVDx v2.3" from this site and try to see if there's a guidefor it. What it essentially does is capture your video during playback which can then create MPEG-1, MPEG-2 or into another AVI, then you can import that newly created file into your DVD software. I would recommend creating it in MPEG-2 since that is the main standard for regular DVD's, be sure to select NTSC and not PAL if you are in the U.S.A. and make sure the output setting is at 29.97 fps. Thank you for the reply MJS41. Your suggestion sounds attractive and i will give it a try . I'm heading back up to the cottage (Midland, Ont., Canada) and may not be able to post my result for a while.
Also here is an update on what happened when i tried to open the CD last nite in case someone recognizes a possible puter or software problem.
An update on what happens with my movie CD when in my newer puter running WXP pro. (AMD3000, 180 gig HD, 1 gig ram, ATIAIW600pro256M pci express).
If I insert the cd it autoplays completely without any problem in Windows media player. If I click on properties (cd in the DVD drive) and change the autoplay to Nero Showtime (for video files) and then reinsert the CD it autoplays in Nero Showtime but I get sound only (no video).
If I right click on the DVD drive and select OPEN sometimes I get a video icon showing the name of the project with an AVI extension and the error message, quote; Active Movie Window: Explorer.exe ? Application Error . The instruction at ?0x01cae710? referenced memory ?0x01cae710?. The memory could not be written. Click on OK to terminate the program. Click on CANCEL to debug the program. I have to END TASK to get out of the program.
Other times I only get a similar error message (without the icon and project name and its AVI extension) with different addresses such as 0x026bf710 or 0x01cdd710 each time I try to check the CD.
Probably the simplest way is to abandon the movie clip but I?m a stubborn old fart and would really like to know what is going on. So thank you anyone who can point me in the right direction. Yrnehbad

I really think that the AVI was encoded in such a way that not all software programs are going to be able to read it. I would use the DVDx program to create a new MPEG-2 file and back it up too for future use. Good luck.

Another update to my problem ; i think i found out what the problem is but i dont know what to do about it.
Using MS medial player and its menu bar i found i could save my AVI file as an AVI file in MY DOCUMENTS. However when i double clicked on this file in MY DOCUMENTS it played in Nero with sound only (no video) and with the same error message i described in earler posts. If i opened MS Media player and opened this AVI file (from the MY DOCs folder) it played properly without any problems. So it looks like Nero may be the culpert.Did Nero make it the default player anytime i double click on a video file ? At least now i have the AVI file on my hard drive and i assume i should be able to add it to my DVD compilation. I would still appreciate input as to whether i'm on the right track. Yes, you may just be missing a codec for the AVI. Have you updated Nero? Are you using Version 6.6?

Thank you for your continued patience with me. I'm at cottage again and am sure my Nero is updated as of July but not sure what version (will check when i get home). I dont really understand why it works with MS Windows media player. Does this mean that WXP already must have the correct codec ? Does Nero need its own copy of the codec ? Thanks again. Yrnehbad

I think once the codec is loaded it should work with all software platforms. You may need to uninstall Nero and reinstall?

I'd have thought just restarting Nero would be sufficient for Nero. Check for newly installed codec. Am in the park at the moment so can't check easily. Or a reboot of pc at worst but I doubt you gotta reinstall nero

Hi, Im? back from cottage and have another update. Just to summarize , I wanted to be able to take a movie clip (AVI file) of my grandson from a CD and incorporate it on a DVD with other movie clips. Every time I tried to move the file from the CD I got an error message (once asking for a proper codec). The file would autoplay properly in Windows Media Player but everytime I tried to single or right click on the file (from the CD) I got an application error (see attached jpeg). I managed to move the AVI file from the CD by going to FILE in Windows media player and saving it in the MY DOCs folder on the desktop. Whenever I tried to double click on the file it tried to open in Nero with an almost identical application error. I suspected the Nero APP. Very recently I discovered that the file could be imported into either my Nero or my PINNACLE APPs to make a movie if imported from within the apps (by clicking FILE, locating it in MY DOCS and then double clicking the file). They appear to play fine inside either of these APPs. So I assume the codec is not the problem.
Also I now believe I should be able to incorporate the file on a DVD (will try soon).
However, I am still troubled why I keep getting the error message every time I try to single or right click on the file in the MY DOCS Folder (when not inside an APP) . This also happens if I try to select the file in Windows Explorer in order to move it elsewhere. It seems that I can select the file while in the Pinnacle or Nero apps and save it to other folders without any problem. Could this be a Windows XP pro problem ? The file is approx 21 Mb. Try to Right-Click the file and select Open-With and then select the application you are trying. If you have WinXP SP2 loaded that may be the problem as some applications don't work well with SP2. You may need to call Microsoft on this as it seems a fresh install of your system may be in order?

Thank you for the reply but both left click as well as right clicking on the file in the MY DOCS or in Win Explorer bring up the error message. It may not be worth pursuing this much longer because the file can be opened and worked with if i work from the Nero or PINNACLE applications. Whether the authored and burned DVD works may still turn out to be another problem. It just really bugs me when something doesnt seem right. Thanks again, yrnehbad
