On stores online, i see that alot of the DVD's are packed in cake boxes, does that mean it does not come with a spindle and are just put in cakeboxes?

Cakebox means they are on a spindle in a plastic covered box with a removable lid otherwise they are just in a wrapper without any spindle.

There are rarely any defects in the discs due to packaging. Cakeboxes are better than plain plasic wrappers IMO because the spindle keeps them from sliding against each other. The only better alternative is to buy dvds in their own idividual jewel cases but this isn't feasable, far too expensive, and you can't get the good prices buying them in jewel cases like you can in bulk. Believe me there is nothing wrong with cakebox packaging.

yeah, to be able to buy in BULK, cakebox packaging is USUALLY one of the ways to purchasing them cheaper~ i have never had a problem with dvd media when it came in cakebox~:) the only time i ever had problems with the discs is when the cakebox was SHATTERED due to very poor shipping from amazon, luckily, the dvd blanks were fine minus a few from the top that were scratched during shipment; but, to buy from the store, MOST companies use the cakebox to package them in. i agree w/ mort on this one, for MOST cases, they work well...it's just when you order them online and depending on how WELL the company packs them before shipping, you might run into problems during transit (UPS for one throws/kicks packages around like a soccer ball, but, regardless, if the company you bought them from packages them correctly w/ peanuts/bubbles/air cushions/etc PROPERLY, then there is no real reason why the cakebox packaging wouldn't hold up and keep your discs safe)~ :)

The hub on most DVDs, is a slightly thicker than the recording area, keeping the discs from damaging one another.

Maybe it gets it's name from something like a bundt cake pan. Ever see one of those? It has a spindle in the middle and you turn it upside down to get the cake out. My better half (and smarter half) told me this might be where the name came from.
