HELP: I have an error 16. Does a mod chip work?

I softmodded my xbox then deleted both the modded and MS dashbords. Now when I start up my xbox it comes up with an error 16. Ive tried making a boot CD to rebuild a MS dashboard but I cant get it to boot. I decided to forget the rebuild CD and buy a modchip. I bought a Smart XX v.2 modchip (http://www.smartxx.com/index.php) and it can be turned off and on so I can use xbox live. This looks like the way to go. Please if anyone has done this or knows any thing about doing this let me know!!
