There is a lot info about brands like Taiyo Yuden (TY) and Mitsubishi Chemical Corp (MCC) media. Who sells these brands? In southern california no such brands exsist. Brands that they sell down here are Fuji, Great Quality, tdk, sony, HP, Apple, verbeam or something close to that, and a lot of no name house brands.
Where do I buy the reliable brands? And what is the most reliable brand?

@chaseme
a simple search through this forum will answer your question...i too live in s. cali and for TY media, look for the Fuji/Sony DVD+R MADE IN JAPAN on the cakebox~ those are the YUDEN000T02 for the most part~ things might have changed recently, but, i have hundreds of the fuji and sony media in the DVD+R format from a few months ago when best buy and compusa had their sales respectively to obtain the genuine TYs here. secondly, for MCC media, Verbatim made in taiwan in the DVD+R format now are PRETTY MUCH ALL MCC coded media when you look locally here in the stores. 8x DVD+R Verbs are MCC003 (my personal favorite) and the 16x DVD+R Verbs are the MCC004~ very good media also~
just do a quick search for either TY or MCC and you will see MANY threads explaining this in further details..good luck, i just basically did a "recap" for you to help you get started. welcome to AD and enjoy your stay~ :)

From that list and not knowing the burner's model #, I'd take the fuji in either format, sony 1x-8x speed only/ either format, tdk dash format only.I also look for made in japan on those wrappers.
The japanese maxells are also excellent. Staples have the taiwanese ones on sale, but if you take that ad to wal-mart-they have some of the better japanese ones after a little searching. Just look at the upc code.

Thanks for all the information. Some of you mentioned dvd's that are made in japan. Let's say fuji for an example. Will the wrapper say product of japan or made in japan? Or will there be a bar code that states what region the dvd's were made in? For example
1234-123-3jap. The jap at the end means a product of japan.

... With the Maxell discs, right next to the barcode it will either say made in Japan or nothing will be printed .. All Maxell discs are good ... On the TDK, Fujifilm and Sony discs, you will need to read the wrapper ... It will say made in Japan, Taiwan or some other place ... With the TDK and Fujifilm discs only get the made in Japan discs ... As far as I know and have experienced, all Sony discs are good ...
... Best Buy is good for the TDK, Fujifilm, Sony and Verbatim sales ... Staples and Office Depot are good for Maxell sales while WalMart has pretty good everyday prices for Maxell ...
... If you want to buy online ...
http://www.newegg.com/ http://www.meritline.com/ http://www.supermediastore.com/index.html .. are all good venders .. NewEgg is my favorite, but that's also personal preference ..
... My favorite discs (in no particular order) are: Verbatim, Sony and Maxell since it really doesn't matter where these come from, they're all good ...

Not all sony's are good. The 4x and the 1x-4x speeds for both formats are very difficult to tell. The 1x-8x are all very good,so far.
The sony spindles of 50 will say Fabrique in taiwan or Fabrique au japan to the right of the logo that looks like an american football with the 1x-8x. Some of the sony's are trickier. They'll use the same code on some of their dash media like sony04D1 on their taiwanese and austrian discs 1x-4x discs. They also use Sony08D1 on both their taiwanese and japanese dash 1x-8x.
Their plus format of 1x-8x are excellent from both japan and taiwan. The japanese ones are coded Yuden000-T02. Their taiwanese are coded SonyD11. These babies will burn at 16x on both my benq's so you want to be careful on that max burn speed setting if you have a 16x burner.
I'm with catfreak on the maxell plus format.Excellent ricohjpn-01 on all the 300+ discs with the +4x speed. I have had that code with the 3/5/10/15/25/and 50 pack spindles. Some reports of cmags on some of their smaller 3 or 5 packs now,so those pack quantities should be avoided if they are made in taiwan.
The Maxell +8x is excellent from both taiwan and japan. Ritek r03 on their taiwanese and the Hitachi produced Maxell-002-00 on their japanese.
The maxell dash media is also very good. Also using taiyo yuden/maxell/and ritek. I've also used a lot of different quantity packs with all 3 of those manufacturers.
I can't complain about any of those 8x speed media except they will burn at 12x and 16x. Then there's my favorite, Verbatim data life plus +8x with the mfg code of MCC-003 with the metal azo dye.SWEET!

im with saugmon on the quality of discs...MCC003 is MY favorite of the DVD+R flavor~ i have yet to make a "bad backup" with any of these 8x DVD+R Verbatims~ :) while i have hundreds of the YUDEN000T02 coding that i obtained locally when i purchased the MADE IN JAPAN Fuji and Sony brand names for the 8x DVD+R, the MCC003's are my media of choice when it comes to booktyping the DVD+R to dvd-rom format~ i have had 100% compatibility with my stand alones using those~:)
