DVD-RW Drive - LITE-ON DVD-RW LDW-411S
Firmware - FS0K
Media - Memorex DVD-R (8x)
OS - Windows XP Pro

My problem is when I burn a data DVD of video (.avi) files (26 files, ~178 MB each, 4.36 GB total) for archival I get a CRC error when I attempt to retrieve them from the DVD. I have tried both NERO (V6.3.1.17) and also CopyToDVD but still get the error. I have burned 8 DVDs trying different things to fix it but so far no luck. I always burn at 2x or less.

I have cleaned the laser with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab, as someone suggested that the drive may have been dirty, but this did not fix anything.

I tried switching the drive to the top slot on my computer, still no luck.

I'm sure I'm missing something, but I can't think of anything else to try before I go and buy a new DVD-RW dive.

Thank you,
J. Davis

I've never had any problems with Memorex. I've made dozens of back up DVDs with them before. I can imagine 1 or even 2 DVDs being bad, but not 8 in a row, from two different stores. But, just to cover everything, I did buy a few different brands to try. Both Sony and Verbatim failed the same as the Memorex.

Just throwing this out there, but has anyone experienced problems after using StarforceNightmare? I did use that for the first time before I started having problems.

Hi J.Davis

I have exactly the same problem and it's really annoying..

I also have a Lite-on DVD-RW and get CRC errors.. Now that you talk about starforce nightmare you just remind me I've tested it and I heard about a lot of problems with that Starforce protection.. So.. I guess that could be the reason.. But I'll search more and tell you if I find anything that could fix this problem. I have found Check CD that repairs the files but it's pretty slow.. So I'll tell you if I find something and it would be nice if you told me if you find something interesting :)

Thanks

Welcome to AD!
Memerox is probably the worst media out there and the cause of your problem. They usually use CMC which is why they are so bad. Search the boards you'll find alot of Memerox nightmares. I've used them and even if they burn the chances of the disc degrading is high.

I have been having the same problems on 3 different burners, with 3 different types of media. So far it had happened on two 'new releases' like "Hitch" and "Are we there yet".

As of now I don't know what else to do. I have tried Nero, CVC XCopy, and DVD Shrink. They must be putting something on these disks causeing the CRC error. I sure dont know, but would sure like to know a way around this.

Hello jbdavis,

I also have a bunch of cheap media, and when I burn something to them, I always like to be sure I can retreive everything off of it.

VSO Inspector v1.1 [Free] provides you 2 tests.

1- Sector Read Scan
2- File Read Scan

If you get 100% on both these tests, you are looking good.
If you get errors, it ends up in the garbage !

My 2 cents worth !

@weezer

For these movies you have to use DVD Decrypter and rip to your hard drive and then use Shrink. Or get the trial version of AnyDVD and run it in the background with Shrink. Shrink cannot handle these movies on its own, and Xcopy is too outdated.
