Ok, so yesterday i installed Nero to use with Shrink (I had been having problems with Decrypter), and from start to finish (Shrink encoding and the burn process) took about two hours. Nothing special, i was backing up Bringing out the Dead, movie only, no menus or special features. Is this a normal backup time????? Before i was ripping to HD with Decrypter, then using shrink, then Decrypter again to burn and that whole process took about 45 mins...

I noticed on your other thread before you said you got read errors with decrypter. In some casses if you get enough read errors in DVD decrypter it will drop your DVD drives from DMA mode into PIO mode.

To check this out do the following:

Go to device manager in your system settings. For XP you can do the following

Click on start at the bottem
Then click on control panel
Then when the window comes up click on System in the list
Now click the Hardware Tab at the top of this window.
Now click Device Manager

Now in the list of devices go to IDE Controlers and click on it.
Now in that list is the list of your controlers.
Open up the controler options on each IDE channel and click on Advanced settings tab and make sure there in DMA mode not PIO.

If it is in PIO mode and wont go back into DMA mode then delete the channel of your DVD rom and restart computer it will readd the IDE channel and should be back to DMA mode.

Just a little explination of what the diffrence between PIO and DMA is incase you dont know.

DMA: DVD/CD ROM sends information to ram.
PIO: DVD/CD Rom sends information to the CPU.

CPU can access the ram quicker then it can the DVD/CD drive.

just out of curiosity, if my drive is in DMA, how long should it take to encode (with DVD43 or anydvd) through shrink and burn using Nero?

Depends on your computer.
With an older computer with not much ram 2 hours to back up a DVD would be about right.

But in riddle29 case he had fast speeds before and now are slow most of the time that means your drive fell into PIO mode.

So it really depends on CPUspeed/RAMspeed The faster the CPU and the more RAM you have the faster and better quility you will have.

It also depends on the size of the movie.

My times are:

Ripping DVD(with DVD Decrypter or ANYDVD): 10 to 20 minutes depending on size of DVD.
Transcoding(with NERO RECODE2): 15 to 40 minutes depending on size of DVD
Burrning(with Image tool nero suported): At 4X is 12 to 15 minutes

Thats with 3.2 GHz processor and 1GB of ram.

There are some other varibles that can speed up or slow down this time. Like closing all programs before backing up DVD and let it do its work without surfing the web or doing other things but the most efective way for speed is CPU and RAM.

Thats just my opinion. Other might disagree. But always keep in mind dont substute speed for quility. I always burn at 4x or less and I uasly always deep anylise my movies. I know some dont but I do it anyway better to be safe then sorry with a bad Copy.
